Opening Shock
In reply to:
Opening shock on a freefall slider down deployment is much harder than on any skydive.

I'm going to have to say this is false. I've had several skydives that far exceeded the opening shock of any slider down deployment. It is true as a general rule if you are taking at least 2 seconds though :)

edit: I've split this off from "I want BASE", as it looks like a separate discussion.

Re: [base698] I want BASE
Uh, yeah, what he said.

Let me amend that to "any normal skydive".

On the other hand, I've had some exceptional slider down openings that I'd bet were harder than _any_ skydive, period.

Hardest opening I've ever had, bar-none, was a brutal slammer under an FX-109. I literally saw stars.

Re: [Zennie] I want BASE
My hardest ever opening was a 3 second slider down under an old PD-235. The tail pocket velcro was worn, and I'm pretty sure the lines dumped. At any rate, I lost consciousness. The landing was not pretty, but fortunately relatively uneventful.

Re: [base698] Opening Shock
Most severly incapacited was on a 79 Velocity. I've had brutal openings on several skydiving canopies.

The hardest BASE opening was a 10 second delay on my ACE240 packe with the nose WIDE open and probably didn't control the slider that well. That one jiggled my insides.

Hard openings slider down has been tolerable so far. The longest delay was a 3.5 ish on a Black jack. It was very reasonable.

I had a 180 on the same tower jumping in an excessive cross wind. 2 second delay. The opening shock was ok but my neck got worked from the 180.

The same opening can also feel very different depending on body position.

Re: [hookitt] Opening Shock
My hardest was also my Velocity 96. I've got about 400 jumps on it and its the only time i've ever had an opening like that. I didn't think an opening like that was possible on a skydive (unless the slider was down).

Re: [base698] Opening Shock
Ditto. Hardest opening, well its a tie. FX 79 and Velo 75, both times I let a new packer pack it, go figure Crazy. I always make the locking stows 5-6 inches wide on these canopies to avoid dumpage, however I forgot to tell the packer this concept. Talk about seein little stars all the way to the ground and massive migrane-like headaches, ugh.

Re: [base698] Opening Shock
hardest opening was under an original sabre 190. i had about 20-30 skydives and i pulled in a track(what was i thinking) when i landed i thought my legs were broke. the pants i was wearing were completely ripped in two from the botton all the way to the belt line. it took over two weeks for the bruises to heal so i could jump again.
show me a 2 sec.delay that can do that i'll kiss your ass. haha.

ah poor baby........... take up chess if the openings hurt you!

I dont know! first splinters, and now brisk openings........... are base jumpers going soft and gay? WinkTongue

The openings are softer than hitting the ground - thats all that matters.

Cool

Re: [BASE813] Opening Shock
I was far from complaining about BASE openings. I was however complaining about my 1 rogue skydiving opening that made my neck hurt for about 6 months. This thread was about relative of harder/softer openings, not who can take what amount of brute force Tongue

He was answering me. I doubt that many skydivers would claim me as one of their own. But I'll try to make it to a dropzone and find out. Wink
