The CBS camera gus blow. I was really really hoping to see more.

Maybe someone will have better video and post it somewhere. *hoping*

Know how they did the launch? Did they static-line or what?

Totally, but what do you expect? They're Whuffos.

Unfortunately camcorders were not allowed into the stadium. So any additional coverage is going to have to come from the jumpers or support crew. A fellow I work with is a big Pats fan and was at the game. And because Jimmy told us about this planned jump a couple of weeks ago while we were in Moab, I told my work colleague to watch out for it. So it'll be interesting to get his views of the whole deal. But he is a whuffo as well.

Don't quote me, but I believe they used static-lines.

It's the grand finale of the American football season... You know, the game where men in tights and body armor chase a little funny-shaped ball around, jumping on top of each other and spanking each other on the bum??? Wink

It was so cool that these guys(/gals) got to BASE jump into the stadium this year! Too bad we didn't get to see a better shot of it...

I would imagine Felix will dismiss this as a non-BASE jump then according to the 'rules of BASE' which he incidentally wrote. Smile

Re: [AggieDave] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
What a waste. Must have not been planned that way. Too bad no jumper was able to video the jump portion from exit to landing. It could have been better as far as what was shown on TV. I am sure the guys who did the jump had a good one, but as for tv, I am glad i missed it and i sure wouldn't sit through any sports stuff just to see a base video - theres plenty of those around without putting up with american aggression narcotic.

Re: [BASE2010] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
Yea, if I watch anyone's video of the jumps, I will require a mute button. I watched those old guys try to sing, but they sounded so bad, I almost turned it off before the jumps...

If anyone is in the know, were the jumps mis-edited to keep more camera time on the dinosaurs, or just in case there was a incident, they wouldn't have televised it live? My non-gravity-sport-friends thought that they skydived in through the opening in the stadium...

Not really certain you understand how it works, but the "Old Guys" where the reason the BASE jumpers where there, not the other way round.

Re: [quade] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
This comment has nothing to do with BASE (so why am I making it?), but I last saw the old guys live in December of 2002 and they still know how to put on a great show. Blush

Seems that one of the canopies (BR FLiK 266) is for sale on eBay

Why a US C-licence 'req.' to jump a 266 as a skydiving canopy???

Re: [SpinDoctor] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
am i the only one that thinks selling a BASE canopy at ebay is WRONG???

I think the jumps were nice, but to sell a BASE canopy, and telling it works, but you should know what you do..Crazy
If a fan would buy it,would it then be nessasery to have lines on the canopy?
If its sold as a BASE canopy it should never be on ebay.. just my oppinion..

<shaking head, and wait to hear about the incedent were this canopy is involved>

Re: [pullhigh] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
Hi All!

We're so stoked! Now that the "secret" event has been successfully pulled off and aired, we can discuss the details!

There were 5 BASE jumpers in the rafters of the stadium; Marta, Jimmy, Tim Rigby, Jeb, and Anne. They all static lined with a double break-cord attachment and were given a cue to jump right near the end of Dream On. They jumped 4 seconds apart, flew a simple flight path and landed near the Aerosmith stage on or about the 30 yard line. We were hoping to get better TV coverage, but that's show biz.

Aerosmith, especially Steven Tyler, was completely stoked about having BASE jumpers during their bit. Steven has done some paragliding and apparently loves parachute sports. He was amazingly cool and nice, and invited the jumpers and staff to their dressing room after the show (thanks in no small part to Avery Rhinoballs).

The jump went exactly as planned and practiced in rehearsal. Everyone did an excellent job, and the biggest credit must go to Todd Shoebotham, who has been working his head off over the last 2-3 months to make this stunt happen. We were so proud to see our guys come flying in under the Aerosmith FLiKs, landing on the field of Super Bowl XXXVIII...it is just beyond words...

We're glad you all got to see a glimpse, and hopefully you'll get to see more of the footage later on. If nothing else, I'll bring video to the Spring Fling in Moab to share with everyone that can make it.

I gotta tell ya, this is one sweet slot! :)

Peace,
Karen

PS: Our crew made a total of 53 jumps in the Reliant Stadium!

Not sure if I'll be experienced enough to jump in Moab by then (probably not), but when is this Spring fling? And please don't say it's in the Spring. But I can always be there with my trusty camcorder. Tongue

Wow! That's pretty neat. Cool 53 totally legal jumps in a very cool place. I bet that was really fun coming down under canopy while Aerosmith was playing, with so many people in the stadium! Congratulations to the jumpers (and crew) for pulling it off so smoothly! SmileSmileSmile

And thanks for sharing the info with us, Karen. Wink

Re: [K763] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
Is there a reason why ærosmith was wearing empty rigs on stage? Was the orignal plan for the jumpers to jump and then have ærosmith take the stage?

Does anyone have video of the begining of the jumps?
Shortcut
Re: [Slight] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
It looks like that at some point they were going to do the classic Demo gag of a jumper making an entrance via parachute, running behind the stage or a speaker stack and then having the celebrity walk on stage so it looks like the celeb made the jump.

In the preshow video, before Aerosmith took the stage they were dressed like astronauts going to the space station, once at the space station, the video makes it look as if they are preparing for a space walk. From the camera's point of view, you then see a kinda of a re-entry into the atmosphere, through clouds and zooming down to an open stadium.

At some point, they must have decided that the jump would look "better" at the end of the number.

Small changes to events like these can be frequent. Sometimes the changes are made for silly reasons and kinda ruin the overall concept. If they wanted to move the jumps this late in the show, then there was no reason to not show the jumper's exits -- thereby ruining a huge potential boost for BASE. They'd already changed (blown) the demo switch gag, so why NOT show the exits? Grrrr.

The coverage of this jump was so bad, that by looking at the video, it's pretty much impossible to tell there were five jumpers.

I'm sure it will all be covered in an up coming issue of Skydiving Magazine.

Re: [quade] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
I'm sure everyone agrees that the coverage was awful.

But what I think is even worse is that I'm sure many people did not even realize that they were BASE jumps at all.

All that was shown were a bunch of canopys in the air and I'm sure that many people did not realize that it was an enclosed stadium and that those canopys really came from inside the stadium.

You would think that most people would put such a simple thing together, but I talked to several wuffos who saw the pregame show and did not think twice about the fact that the building was enclosed.

Truly a shame.

Re: [dbagdrew] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
I agree totally. I talked with several whuffo's, and even most of my skydiving friends, and none of them realized that they had come fro inside the building. I kept pointing out that the roof was closed for weather in the area, and they all thought I was full of shit.

Re: [Slight] Aerosmith and the Superbowl?
Yes, the original idea was to have us stunt double for the band, but there wasn't time to do all the connecting video, so instead we just did the jump at the end of the song.

The band wore the rigs, I guess!, because they liked them and thought they were cool! I wish they had let me help them get dressed; I would have tied the rigs closed with pull up cords and made them look at least neat. We were stoked that the band wore them during the show!

Again, I agree, that the coverage could have been better, and most people didn't even realize what they were seeing. That's why I wanted the BASE community to watch, because y'all had the knowledge to appreciate the stunt.

Thanks for all your support, folks! We're pleased to have contributed to the betterment of the BASE image in the public eye, for what it's worth.
