General BASE

Ready for BASE?
I've heard/read several things about how much experience you need to consider base (250 skydives seems to be the consensus), but then I spoke to someone who started after 100+ skydives. I know canopy control is crucial, but how do you know when you're ready for BASE?

There's a lot more to it than that.
Have you seen the link at the top of the page?

I toyed with this alot when I was thinking of getting into this sport............ but its turns out that its not something you should have to think about.

One day you will just know "I am ready". and it all fits together............

Remember, you dont find BASE - BASE finds you.

Effective January 1st, 2004, the sport of BASE Jumping will not be accepting any new applicants.Wink

Just kidding.

How will you know when you are ready for BASE? (that sounds like a question that Luke Skywalker would ask Yoda). When you are ready, YOU WILL KNOW. Make the required skydives and practice canopy control and landing precision. When you are comfortable with that, then see a BASE mentor or take a BASE FJC. Good luck.

Re: [benny] Ready for BASE?
I realised I was ready when my (now) mentor agreed to take me on and I thought "shit, I'm actually going to do it". Reading websites, talking to BASE jumpers, thinking about fjcs - these things are easy. Making that decision to actually jump - that's the hard part and when it comes to it you'll know whether it's right or not.

I'd be interested to hear from anyone that's run an fjc as to whether they've ever had a student turn up who clearly wasn't ready. Do people ever get that far without realising that they're not ready?

Re: [benny] Ready for BASE?
Nowadays, the important question really is "am I cool enough to get into BASE?" After all, it's 2004 and it's no longer about the sport or the friendship. . . now, it's all about appearances!

R.I.P BASE.

Dog is right that appearances are important. I reccomend getting a fashion advisor to make sure that your gear and BASE garb are up to snuff. We can't have any mis-matched jumpers muffing up the all important video.

If you are east of the Mighty Mississippi. The all black look works best. It's stealthy and rebellious looking all at the same time, which is important when you are trying to pick up chicks. But make sure you keep at least one Bright as the Sun Neon canopy tucked away in case a TV exposure chance presents itself.

As long as you look good on the exit point and look good in the landing area- nothing else matters!

Yes, and looking good does NOT include having your body bent in ways it was not designed for... Unless there is a bone sticking out.

[attempt at humor]

You must have some great fashion tips for your students that you start out with 0 skydives then.
Is face paint still good in 2004, or is that "old school"? Or was that just never cool?
Is it more important for your container to match your clothes, or your canopy to match your clothes? I know, ideally they would both match, but if that is not possible, then which is better to match? [/attempt at humor]
