We are having a landing accuracy competition at Bridge Day 2003 complete with cash prizes and sponsor giveaways. Since we've taken out the style and opening part of the event to make it simpler, we can only score landings. We plan to only score landings that hit the accuracy pad and only if the jumper stands up the landing. This will reduce the amount of work our LZ crew has to do, plus it only scores the best of the best.

My question is for everyone. What would be the best method to determine 1st thru 5th place winners if we have a tie? We are assuming that several jumpers will score a 0.0 and this would create problems in determining the winner.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Low points scoring system... competitor with the greater number of low scores (i.e. dead centers, 1 cm, etc.) wins. for this to work you have to have a certain minimum number of jumps scored. I don't know how many rounds you think we'll be able to get in, though. The fewer the rounds, the more difficult it will be to distinguish the winners given at least more than two folks get a dead center.

You could do it like they do in competition sailing and reward dead centers by giving it a special points-score. In sailing (same low points scoring system), if you get a first place finish you are scored .75 pts. if you finish second, you get scored 2 pts. that way a dead center (first place finish) is rewarded. As with the above-mentioned tie-breaker, in any situation where 1st and 2nd are tied, the sailor with the greatest number of low-points finishes wins the tie. (Actually I think those rules were recently changed in sailing - now there's low points scoring and bonus points scoring)

In bonus points scoring, a 1st place finish = 0, 2nd = 3, 3rd = 5.7, etc. That may make life difficult for the judges, though... but you could just have them record the distances and then assign points to those distances later on via spreadsheet.

random question: will you see people focusing on accuracy throwing a bit higher to give time to set up than people that arnt worried about the target on BD? I've never been to a BD before and while I wont be jumping this year I still hope to go and meet some folks and have a good time.

There will probably be a few jumpers who'll dump a little higher. All the better...and safer.

well it's generally a free for all: from throw and goes - to humming it into the water with the slider barely on the stops, if at all. More than anything I think the determining factor in freefall delays is the jumper's willingness to get wet. Second determining factor is probably weather, which can only be assessed on the morning of, and throughout, BD. Much more than 4.5 sec delays with the wrong wind and you may not make the designated lz. YMMV.

I don't think you'll necessarily see anyone pulling higher just because they're doing the accuracy comp. Perhaps you might see the serious accuracy competitors jumping slider off for better canopy performance (I DUNNO), which will result in no more than 3- to deep 3 second delays, but I don't think that the effect of the competition on the general flow of jumps will even be noticeable to the avg. joe.

Yeah, Bridge Day is really about BASE jumping. The only reason I brought back "part" of the old competitions that used to take place is because many jumpers requested it. If you like to compete, there's the accuracy comp. If you don't, then just fall off the bridge and enjoy the groundrush......

Shut the competition jumps down at 3;30 and compile the results to find the top 20 place jumpers. Then finnagle an extra hour of jumping from the mayor and have a final round jump-off in reverse order of placement from 4-4;30 pm. Any ties still apparent could then go in sudden-death simultaneous pairs (ie top 2 jumpers go together, then next 2) from 4;30-5;00.

(for that matter, if the competitors aren't jumping off continuously you could let others go to, providing they stayed away from the tuffet).

It would take an act of Congress to open Bridge Day up beyond the 9am-3pm window. Trust me, I've tried. The DOH is the main issue, as they are again shutting down traffic on the bridge this year.

Measure both landing spots (one for each foot) Winner is going to have to be the one that has the least distance, but can stand them up. Then its a contest to see how close you can land to the target, and how far apart you need to spread your feet to still get a stand up landing.

 

Measure the farthest point of contact. ie: if you touch down dead center, and then take 2 steps to avoid falling down, your score is at the 2nd step.
