Re: [flipwithit] GPS / SOS devices
I have used the Garmin inReach for several years, with what is essentially the Expedition plan, and it has worked quite well in... "very remote.." locations.

The iridium network can be a little finicky though, regardless of whose device you are using, so don't expect perfection.

If the reviews of the Zoleo are on point, it should hold up well. I'd like to know how well the battery life holds up in extreme cold.

Post a review when you get back from your trip!

A marine Personal Locator Beacon (PLB) isn't a bad choice. You can get them quite cheap these days, they don't require a subscription, and they're waterproof.

+1 from me for the Inreach Mini. Used as a stand-alone unit or paired with your phone. Iridium network for anywhere on the planet - I guess even on the ISS.

Excellent battery life and taken mine down to -40 deg C over 2 seasons at Baffin.

Rugged. I estimate batt life of around a month if used to send and receive messsages twice a day. If used for tracking crumbs then not so much.

Even send my wife a message at 36,000' between Hawaii and Vancouver.
