Anyone ever considered these for core protection? Either from getting poked on tree landings or impacts? The sports have some similar injuries and mobility demands.

I remember taking a container order for a UK jumper a year or two ago who would jump in some pretty heavy padding on his chest and back. I'm not sure if it was a vest of this style or another.

The only downside I see is that you'll want your gear to be built to your measurements while wearing the vest. I'm not sure if it would then be too large should you choose not to wear the vest for a jump for whatever reason.

I find bulkier safety gear to be a double edged sword in base. Im less likely to get hurt hitting a low cliff If in wearing hanwags, a spine protector, full face helmet, elbow and shin pads, but I think I’m less likely to hit the cliff if I can run faster and push harder away, and have a quicker reaction once I open. I’d never tell someone not to wear a bunch of safety gear, but I think it’s a good discussion to have.

(Not sure on the exact brand, but it's an air vest nonetheless).

I've thought about them a ton for BASE...just can't think of a practical way for them to be implemented. Obviously they can't tether to a saddle or motorcycle gas tank and activated by separation. It would have to be manually activated, and then you're dropping a toggle (or at best not paying attention for a second) to activate. Then there's always the risk of accidental deployments...so yeah. Double edged sword for sure.

I like the D3O in the back of the container. I landed on my back with it when I went into some trees and came out at the bottom (legs zipped into a WS). I don't know that it made a difference, but I'm sure it didn't hurt.

Aside from that, a half shell helmet and knee/shin guards are good minimums to wear when you might hit a wall. The G4 is also promising.

I think all the videos of people bouncing off boulders and other obstacles made me think of the carnage that happens after falling off a 1000lb animal, that and motorcycle accidents.

One last thing, has anyone ever been poked or impaled on a tree landing?

I have a friend that got stabbed pretty good on a tree landing. Branch went right through his wingsuit and into his ass cheek. Needed a decent amount of stitches if memory serves.

When I look for protective gear, I typically stick to climbing, skiing, and cycling (specifically mountain biking) gear. Not to say bull riding isn't an athletic event, but the range of motion requirements are not as critical, so they tend to not be integrated into the design.

For a vest, I would go with the one below, and consider removing the shoulder pads to enhance mobility of your arms. It's very light, designed to accommodate you being impaled on rocks, and breathable for when you take it to Moab in the summer.

Also, definitely keep the above comment in mind that protective gear has the potential to increase your accident rate. It can create a snag hazard (which you should mitigate by wearing protective gear under your clothes whenever possible). It can also decrease your mobility, leading to a poor launch and inhibiting your response on the controls. I ere on the side of bubble wrapping myself, but you should personally weigh the positives and negatives of each piece of gear you use, and come to a deliberate conclusion on the total value it adds or takes away.

But way are you landing in the tree already? Is it because you were in a TS or WS and in your mind you needed to see if you could make the road in Brento and now your're 300 feet off the deck with line-twists?
Are you hitting the tree because you came out to the good ol USA and went to the land of slider down and said "fuck it all, I'm jumping the 4 horseman for my first jump, fak all that overhang bullshit."
I agree 100% with safety devices and equipment, but if it's to compensate for poor judgement than you first need to address your pre-flight, start-up, develop contingencies when plans A-D don't work and mitigate everything you can before you get a launch from comm center.

You don't have to make the road in Brento, you don't have to take 2+ seconds in moab, you don't have to go stowed either on SOME SD jumps, you can jump safer objects everywhere in the USA.

SO what you do is you can make good decisions based off wisdom from poor judgement in your past. (we all do)
But like in skiing the "trees" at a resort. You're not actually skiing the trees, you're skiing the gaps between the trees

At some point added physical protections may become a liability.

I second this. I wore a compression jacket once upon a time. The jacket itself ultimately injured me worse than had I not worn it. Make sure your gear fits perfectly and doesn't encumber you. Never accept snag points or loops of anything.
