A friend and I were talking about this yesterday. Sems to be much lower at this stage compared to last year which is fantastic to see. Any thoughts on why?

Cham remains closed and I have seen a marked decrease in the amount of gnarly short start and low proximity videos floating around Facebook this summer. Maybe the world's demand for gnarly wingsuit video is finally in decline and the fatality stats can decline with it.

I believe it's due to the general decrease in jump numbers. An average jumper actively jumps for about 6 years before slowing down. The big jumping boom began in 2008 (youtube) with the peak popularity in 2010 (rapid progress in wingsuit design)

Thus, the whole rad fad thing is hopefully over now, and we are back to a still until something fundamentally new (not like uphill flare proxy, but something that's considered impossible now) spikes up interest again.

I suspect that you're right in trying to identify a more macro trend as opposed to taking smaller anecdotes (e.g. the closure of Cham).

That said, I think the macro trend to focus on is that last year was so bad. I think a lot of people are taking it slow, or taking a year away from Europe in reaction to last year.

That said, we are all victims of our most recent experience, and I think it's intuitive to expect the pendulum to swing back and forth. The good news is that this (so far) is the first year in awhile that has seen a decline, if memory serves.

As for the valley of death, my feeling is that there was a whole lot less traffic coming through. I couldnt back it up with numbers, just my guts.

Also, there was a lot of bleeding pussies to be observed, maybe the trend has reversed and people are coming clean on their decisions. I surely would hope so.

And against all fears, mine included, we've only seen one actual fatality so far where a onepiece trackingsuit was involved. And that was a fuck-up on a technical exit.

So yea, a short supply of tampons definitly must have occured. As for next year, I urge each and everyone of you to try harder and do more gnarly shit! Short starts, fly-or-die-zones, technical exits, epic video, flying with your feet forward! Only doing high shit with long hikes cant be it!

Maybe it's because they are all dead already. You can't die twice, and many of the best died once already.

I was given two pieces of sage advice years ago. The first being 'There are old jumpers and bold jumpers, but few old and bold jumpers'. The second being that life is too short to make all the mistakes yourself, so learn from everyone else's. Seems it's gained some traction for 2017.

 

2005 and 2006 had no fatality in august. Interesting enough last years august had more fatalities than January-august 2017.
