About a year ago I found this attached to a tower that's jumped on a regular basis. It looks like it took quite a load. Unfortunately, I didn't find any jumpers in the area that claimed it to get the whole story behind it.

Was it a CWY that was rigged wrong? Was it a leader cord that got snagged? Was the deformation caused by exposure to the elements for a month or longer? Could be a dozen things. I have my thoughts but what do you think happened?

Re: [base570] Found
It looks similar to the one I made in Tom's class. I bet it was made by one of his prior students then rigged wrong if it was found like it appears in the picture.

Looks like someone at least lost their attachment point... woops!

The takeaway SL from Apex looks exactly like this, red Dacron w/ grey bartack and a 3.5 link. Not the typical rigging, but who knows how it was being used (or misused).

Re: [Bealio] Found
FWIW, our bar tacks are usually black on one side and white on the other, and occasionally all black or all white (if we've run out of thread temporarily), but never gray.

Tom,

The one I made at your course in 2014 has grey bartack.

Re: [Top_Bunk] Found
I found a static line set up on an object once then showed my friend at the exit point and it ended up being his from his previous jump. I prefer the method Tom showed me because it's very simple.

Funny how many base jumper over complicate a SIMPLE thing.....

The use of take aways are way over used. It's only thing taught and mis used most of the time.

Take aways are awesome and simple when used right. I really like them when I don't want to tie break cord directly to an object that is sharp/angled/rusty and might cause premature failure. Good way to make sure there is consistency on every jump. Im not a big fan of using a link on them. Theyre an easy rigging project for people learning how to sew as well.
