Re: [baffinsafari] Baffin BASE 2018
OK. I did confirm to John. All I can say, this is a once in a lifetime trip. Yes, quite some money. But I think it all worth it. Last base trip was in 2010 so it is about time. Start saving.

Re: [Ronald] Baffin BASE 2018
I received an e-mail inquiring about the DPx specifically for this Baffin trip, so I thought it might be interesting for any others looking at Baffin to consider.

The DPx is designed for serious BASE adventures. It has a built-in storage cell which can hold tents, camping stoves, sleeping bags...all kinds of crazy sh*t. The smaller version is 1300 cubic inches (21.3 liters), the largest possible is 3300 cubic inches (54 liters).

When collapsed the container works and feels like any normal BASE container. When expanded, the PC is moved to an alternative BOC location underneath the storage cell so it's in the same spot that you'd normally find it even though the container has been moved away from your back.

A couple of notes: The attached photos show the largest version (54 liters) both expanded and collapsed.

This DPx, and all future DPx systems, will utilize the Summit-style pin protector flap instead of the old DP style wrap-around flap.

It's not for everybody, but it's pretty rad for the people who go on serious BASE expeditions.

I hope this isn't too much of a commercial...but I thought it would be relevant for any potential Baffin candidates.

Can you post a good photo of the PC in the alternate BOC?

Re: [TomAiello] Baffin BASE 2018
It's been a while since we've updated the user's manual on the DPx but if you scroll through the old one you'll see a decent shot of the alternate BOC on a DPx with the smaller storage cell. It's also a good way to compare the smaller cell to the larger cell, pictured in my post above.

*Edited to say this is an old brochure, not the user's manual.

Will post a picture of it on this specific rig once I have time. Will be taking it on a trip at months end where it will be used in expanded form so pic's ought to follow around then.

Be aware! No Frikandellen included! ;-)

Re: [bluhdow] Baffin BASE 2018
Any BASE rig suitable for terminal jumps will be appropriate for use in Baffin. There is no need for a cargo carrying rig for almost every jump you could imagine doing up there.

Unless your name is Lee and you go out alone in Baffin for months at a time, you just don't need to carry the amount of gear that would necessitate a rig like this.

Jump the gear you're comfortable jumping. Baffin is not the place to be messing around.

Re: [DexterBase] Baffin BASE 2018
Agreed. It's not for everyone.

Todd didn't design this rig to make money, and Apex only sells 1-2 of them per year. It's a highly specialized design for a small niche market of super gnarly and super awesome jumpers. Todd designed this rig because it was fun, and cool, and some of his boldest customers were interested in such a design.

Agreed that Baffin (and any remote, exposed area for that matter) demands that you're familiar and comfortable with your gear.

You are correct, and I didn't mean to imply that I did. I was referring to the business.

My post has been corrected, thank you!

Is the $4,000 for heli jumps as many as you want, a limited number, per jump, varies upon exit...?

Re: [hikeat] Baffin BASE 2018
As the trip is very soon, operational info is now limited to all the participants that have been informed over the last months. Looking to be an incredible expedition.

Re: [baffinsafari] Baffin BASE 2018
Just to wrap up this thread, the trip was unreal. Not tons of jumps just due to the logistics and weather involved in such complicated feat like getting a helicopter to Baffin, but quality second to none. Best single jump of my life up there. John the guide is looking to put more trips together in the future, and these things will keep getting smoother I have a feeling.

Re: [Ronald] Baffin BASE 2018
Sam Ford must be done right. So far that hasn't happened, although I'm pleased that 2018 was safely successful. There will be a 2019, and it will be done right ( on my end ). My apologies for past mistakes. Best school is school of hard knocks. I will be deleting my Baffin BASE threads here in the days coming. 2019 will be through those who know :) cheers and safe jumping and thanks . John
