Broken Leg, Terrrebonne, Oregon - 8th May 2017

Lots of comments on the story from people saying they should chase for reimbursement of the rescue costs. Is the landing area as bad as they say, or is it an Aussie student landing area?

In reply to:
TERREBONNE, Ore. - (Update: Base jumper says there's no place to land at bottom of canyon)

Several agencies worked together at the footbridge over the Crooked River Gorge Monday morning,to treat and rescue a BASE jumper who suffered a broken leg in an illegal jump from the 300-foot-high span and was later cited, Jefferson County Sheriff Jim Adkins said.

Crews responded shortly after 5 a.m. to the injured person below the footbridge, also known as the High Bridge, the older of two bridges that span the 300-foot-deep gorge, said Redmond Fire Marshal Traci Cooper.

The man sustained non-life-threatening injuries after attempting to BASE jump from the footbridge, Cooper said.

Jefferson County sheriff's Deputy Josh Roth said the BASE jumper, a 26-year-old New Zealand man, is an accomplished base jumper who was on his 170th jump.

But it apparently was an illegal jump, without permission from State Parks, the deputy said.

Undersheriff Marc Heckathorn said the man jumped off the High Bridge with a parachute and broke his leg when he landed, then had a friend call 911 for help.

"Base jumping off the High Bridge is illegal and dangerous," Heckathorn said.

Adkins identified the BASE jumper as Isaac Nutira, 26, originally from New Zealand. He said Nutira was cited for BASE jumping without written permission, a level of offense that carries a $110 fine.

"We probably won't go after reimbursement" for rescue costs, the sheriff added.

Other BASE jumpers told NewsChannel 21 it's safe to jump from a 300-foot height and that it takes far more than 170 jumps to be considered an expert in the sport.

BASE jumper James Scott, the owner of Central Oregon Bungee Adventures, said the bottom of the canyon is not safe for landing,

"There's no landing down there. It's hard not to break your ankle walking around." he said.

"It's hard to see from the bridge, but once you get down there, you realize there is no possible way to land a parachute." he added.

Word came around 8:30 a.m. that the Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue high-angle rope rescue team had lifted the injured jumper out of the gorge, to the bridge above, and placed him in a waiting ambulance.

Crews on hand to provide medical care and help in the rescue operation included Redmond Fire and Rescue, Jefferson and Deschutes County sheriff’s deputies, Jefferson County Fire District. No. 1, Crooked River Ranch Fire & Rescue, Oregon State Parks and Deschutes County Sheriff’s Search and Rescue.

BASE (Building, Antenna, Span and Earth) jumping involves leaps from fixed objects with parachutes designed for rapid deployment, and is known to many around the world as the most extreme of extreme sports.

Scott also said he worried the rescued jumper would give BASE jumping a bad name, "It's disrespectful to the local people, to the parks, to the base jumping community."

Best part of the story
"Jefferson County sheriff's Deputy Josh Roth said the BASE jumper, a 26-year-old New Zealand man, is an accomplished base jumper who was on his 170th jump. "

I know $110 aint much but I bet the broken leg bills will cripple him.

The reporter actually called me to ask background questions, and one of the questions asked was "how many jumps does someone have to make before we can call them a Professional BASE Jumper?"

Not kidding.

I was making a point about the relative ignorance of the press about BASE jumping (and the writing of the article) not about the jumper's experience level.

$110 bucks? Is it really just an infraction, not a criminal offense? Or did they go easy on him?

I don't think the quality of the landing area should factor in to whether of not he pays the cost of his rescue. I believe in personal choice and personal responsibility. Unless you pay taxes that go to the agency that provides your rescue AND your actions were legal you should pay, period.

On a deeper note.
The governments should take care of their citizens. But since that is not happening always. One must patch it over to the situation. Did he not have insurance that would cover the risks?
But ya know that sometimes one has the roll the dice". But that is no reason to not calculate the risks and apply it to the situation.
I am not saying that this was the case.
Bottom line is that the government must not only profit from their citizens, but take care of them also. Otherwise, they have no purppse.
Just my 2 cents.
Take care,

As someone who has broken them-self while BASE jumping, first I want to say that I do have some sympathy for this dude. But I think this is kind of entertaining because I [think that I probably] opened this object about ten years ago. There are four or five tall things that you can jump off of in that area, one of which is a little nicer looking than the others, but I wasn't able to view the video on the news site so I can't say which one he jumped from...

There is a relatively safe LZ down there. It is just extremely unpleasant. There is a fairly large, flat, rock-free area under the object that is not that hard to land in. It is just choked with tall brush that precludes you from making a nice swoopy landing that looks rad on video. I certainly didn't have a "pretty" landing when I jumped it, but it never struck me as a particularly gnarly LZ. I think it took me a half an hour to dig my canopy out of the brush.

I guess I should mention that the guy that jumped behind me did manage to hobble away from his landing with a minor ankle fracture, so maybe my memory is just hazy.

I'm just speculating here because I don't know exactly what the guy did, but I can easily imagine someone trying to avoid the "unpleasant" part of the LZ in order to try and do a stand-up landing in a gnarly part of the LZ.

The reason that I bring up this anecdote is that I think that if you are going to do something stupid and pointless like BASE jumping, you should recognize that sometimes an unpleasant LZ is safer than a gnarly LZ, and having an unpleasant landing that makes you look like a dork is superior to rolling the dice on a gnarly LZ and maybe looking cool and walking away.

Anyway, I hope that the jumper heals fast and gets back to having fun soon. And don't jump this bridge, it's a real piece of shit. You'll look like a dork.

he jumped the foot bridge and there is no easy landing area it is all boulders and such. the train trussel is 40' taller and there is a sand bar to land on. also there is a cliff exit that is the closest to the sand bar.

Always nice to start the year with an in depth discussion of an incident. I worry that soon it'll be like last year with multiple fatality threads with one or two comments, and nothing to learn.

I broke both my legs on a BASE jump in New Zealand in the early 1990s. I spent almost a month in a Christchurch hospital and had a major reconstructive surgery there. Total hospital bill: Fifty dollars!

On top of that Air New Zealand gave me two free extra seats so I could lay down for the flight back to the States as I was in plaster up to my hips.

Same planet, but a different universe. Unsure

You could streamline the process by drafting the threads now?

Glad to know one can make the sand bar from the rail bridge. I was never sure and stuck with the cliff. Canyon floor at the footbridge is waste deep boulders from what I remember.
