Red Bull "Athletes" training relatives of Venezualen President and Drug Kingpin
I'm not sure what Red Bull's level of involvement is, but they are obviously aware of what is going on as of yesterday. People have been blowing up the individuals on Facebook for the last 24 hours, and they've been trying to do damage control by deleting comments. #GivesYouWings

To be fair, yes, Venezuela is much worse than Dubai.

The average resident of Venezuela has lost 19 pounds from hunger in the past year.

Here's a good recap of the various news stories, with links to each source: https://fee.org/...horrifying-headlines

Dubai is a functioning nation with an oppressive government.

Venezuela is a geographic area being actively terrorized by a criminal cartel.

It's politics on the internet! Do people still believe on everything they read on it!

There is always a man behind the website and a man behind the article. All of each have their own political agenda and opinions. And nowadays it's full of assholes exaggerating, creating fake new and lying all over it!

The article clearly want to punish Red Bull for being close to a political figure (or the relatives of) which makes it clear to me that this is a politically motivated article. Bashing of celebrities or businesses associated with rival parties is happening in Venezuela, Brazil, Turkey and many others, and that's not something new.

I don't know any of the athletes but unless they say that they knowingly taught a massive drug cartel boss, I would be behind them.

There is no doubt that Venezuela is in a fucked up political crisis but we shouldn't let this political shit spill over to our forum!

How is this BASE related?

Re: [piisfish] Red Bull "Athletes" training relatives of Venezualen President and Drug Kingpin
High profile sponsored professional BASE jumpers are involved. That makes it as base related as many of the things discussed here.

should be in the Hangout forum. They are coaching these people for skydiving not BASE. Seems more like an attack against Red Bull, even if they are not all RBAF athletes.
And if anyone believes that jumping in many "conflictual" country is a 100% innocent fun, they are living in a care bear world.

Exactly. Dubai isn't exactly a haven for freedom either but no one moans about that. At the end of the day when your being paid for a dream job not many people would be stamping their feet in protest, not to mention the fact the links between the operation and the owner were obscure at best.

I can certainly understand skydivers and BASE jumpers looking the other way (or perhaps being completely oblivious) to the politics of a situation like this.

To your point, they are living their dream and Googling the name of every person/president/dictator/war criminal that wants to write them a check might not be part of their protocol.

That said, I'm shocked that Red Bull green lit a project like this. It's definitely a bad look for them.

To be fair, the Human Rights Foundation's founder's mother was shot by agents of the Venezuelan government, so I think you have a fair point about bias. Conversely, the people who shot her served 6 months in jail after being convicted of murder.

Who is the "operation" and who is the "owner"?

The operation is Skydive Caribbean and the owners are the dubious pair who siphoned off money from the Venezuelan people. It's all there in the article my friend.

Tracking that that's all in the article...

I suppose my confusion came from you saying that the link between these two is obscure. The "dubious pair" are (part) owners of the skydive operation. What is obscure about that?

Trying to get yout post count up mate?? The point I was trying to make is pretty clear. All involved in the whole affair aside from the athletes are shady fucks. Anything else I need to clarify?

Re: [BigfcknG] Red Bull "Athletes" training relatives of Venezualen President and Drug Kingpin
I think you just proved his point.

All involved in the affair, aside from the athletes, are indeed "shady f*cks."

His point, and the point of the article, is to ask why the athletes would take money from these folks. And even more perplexing, is why their very large and public sponsor would allow it.

Before reaching for torches and pitchforks i'd probably wait to know more about what the story is to be honest, and I'd be wary to read too much into what's in that article after having done a little digging around.

Couldn't find any info of the involvement of those 2 guys in the DZ, if they are really part owners, how much of a stake they have, etc. everything i could find points to that Trimarchi guy to be the owner and director. Also, the photos showing the sons/daughter supposedly being 'trained' by the RB mob last week are not such, in fact one of the photos is 23 months old and the other one 14 months.

Also, the guy who owns and runs that 'charity' that put out the press release, who also happens to be the same giy who wrote the NY Post article linked in that press release, seems to have a bit of an axe to grind (article about him and his organisations here and him personally just past half way down)

So all in all i'd give the benefit of the doubt. All we know for sure is that the RB guys got contracted to coach and LO for 2 weeks at a Venezuelan DZ.

I'm with you. I don't think it's the athletes job to do thorough research on this stuff as the author of the article had. Red Bull though? Probably. Easy to point fingers when it's all laid out in print though.

I have not dug in and spent quality time doing research on Dubai. But I think it is worth taking the time to consider what are our moral responsibilities.

Good thing the skydive industry in the US never had anything to do with drug importation. All the big airplanes pre tandem industry were paid for how?
Having been out of the scene for a long time I was surprised when Dubai became a thing, still surprised skydivers go there considering the penalties for normal skydiver type behaviors. And the past may not justify condoning things in the present.

I don't think the issues people have with the Venezuelan government have to do with drugs at all.

It seems like it's more about the artificially inflated food prices that are starving people in Venezuela to generate profits for the military.

In reply to:
As Venezuela's crisis deepens, President Nicolas Maduro's stepsons spent last week skydiving with top international athletes.
The family's indulgence -- first mentioned by the nonprofit Human Rights Foundation -- comes at a time when Venezuelans suffer through food and medical shortages and the country is going through a major political upheaval with protests springing up across the nation. Over 30 protesters have died.

The Human Rights Foundation says the family's actions contradict the president's message of a government empowered by working class Venezuelans.

"This situation perfectly illustrates the hypocrisy of Venezuela's socialist regime," says Javier El-Hage, chief legal officer of the Human Rights Foundation.

The athletes, along with their sponsor Red Bull, also found themselves in the center of a maelstrom. They were the subject of sharp backlash on social media this week after Human Rights Foundation lambasted them for skydiving with Maduro's stepsons.

Red Bull said it played no role in the event whatsoever. It did confirm to CNNMoney that the trip took place.

"Red Bull did not finance these athletes in Venezuela or have any involvement in this event," a Red Bull spokesperson told CNNMoney in a statement.

Red Bull said the athletes "were simply following the invitation of an old friend at SkyDive Caribbean," referring to the Venezuelan company that organized the event and invited the athletes.

The athletes -- Amy Chmelecki, Mike Swanson, Jon DeVore and Noah Bahnson -- didn't respond to requests for comment. They skydived with Maduro's three stepsons in Venezuela for four days last week, according to a person with knowledge of the skydives who requested anonymity for fear of retribution from the Maduro family.

Red Bull said the athletes personally paid for their entire trip and received no compensation or reimbursement from anyone. The skydivers were not aware who they would be jumping with until they arrived in Venezuela.

SkyDive Caribbean had initially agreed to pay each Red Bull athlete $350 a day, along with free food, accommodation and transportation, according to the source in Venezuela.

But once Human Rights Foundation published its article on Saturday, the athletes refused to accept any compensation and quickly left Venezuela.
The athletes still got the free food, accommodation and transportation while in Venezuela, according to the source.

Maduro's stepsons -- Yosser Gavidia Flores, Walter Gavidia Flores and Yoswal Gavidia Flores -- were to pay SkyDive Caribbean for the world class instructors, according to the source.

SkyDive Caribbean charges $20 per jump. That's equal to half the monthly minimum wage in Venezuela, currently valued at $39. The source said Maduro's stepsons skydive two to three times a month.
Venezuelan government officials did not respond to a request for comment.
