Southern Wisconsin or Surrounding Area Mentor
I’ve been interested in the possibility of getting into BASE for a couple years now. If there’s anyone in the Southern Wisconsin, Northern Illinois, or surrounding area that would be willing to let me ground crew, I’d really appreciate any opportunity to learn before I decide to take a FJC. And of course, beers on me. Right now, I have about 350 skydives. Ideally, I’d like to get at least another 100 skydives in, get some experience ground crewing, and take a course this summer. If I’m not ready, I’m not ready. I’m definitely not looking to rush into anything, and I know that the decision should be made based on an objective evaluation of skill rather than an arbitrary number.
I never thought I’d be able to jump out of a plane, but, once I overcame that fear, skydiving exposed me to so much beauty in the world. It taught me not to worry about things that are trivial or insignificant, and it showed me the beauty of humanity. The people that I’ve met skydiving are very genuine, and most of them seem to share this appreciation for what is simple and what is beautiful.
I’d like to get into BASE for much the same reasons. I’d like to feel that sense of “letting go” again; I’d like to experience beautiful places from the BASE perspective; I like the sense of community. I also really enjoy hiking and nature, and I'd love to combine these passions.
The planning component of jumping really appeals to me, too. I enjoy math and science, and I approach most things using logic rather than emotion. This means that I’m never afraid to sit out on a skydive if the conditions aren’t right—even if it means making the call from jump run—and that I’d never be afraid to back down from a jump.
So please, send over any advice, readings, contacts, videos, or other information that you feel would be beneficial for someone with a real interest in BASE. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
