OSP Sizing
I have been jumping a 245 Rock dragon (yup! ancient stuff) for a couple of years and very comfortable with the flight, handling, and openings on it. Looking to get a get an OSP now. As per the OSP manual I should get an OSP 245 (i.e. PIA 260) for my weight (160 lbs). Since I've always flows a PIA 245 canopy the question I have is should I consider an OSP 225 or OSP 245? I'm not looking for major glide but at the same time don't want to be stuck with elevator descents all the time even in low to moderate winds. would greatly appreciate some thoughts here from folks who have experience with OSPs.

cheers!

I weigh 160 lbs naked and I'm jumping a 245 OSP. I'm super happy with it so far but then again I only just started BASE Tongue

Re: [setarkos] OSP Sizing
what kind of winds were you jumping in? how far was the landing area? and how did the canopy perform?

Re: [rendezvous] OSP Sizing
I jumped the bridge in Croatia in no winds and Brento in variable winds.
It is not the best canopy to reach a far landing zone but it was even for a beginner like me very easy to land in tight spots: I landed on the gravel road on my second cliff jump, where the tree tops are pretty exactly a canopy width apart. Landed on the gravel pitch a couple times in deep brakes, still quite soft landings. On the sun plates you get upward thermals when the sun is strong - did not feel too turbulent.
I also skydived it twice in fairly strong winds (20-25 knots) and did not have any problems even though those were the first two rides on that canopy. Never felt like a helpless feather in the wind Smile

But there are some many people jumping OSPs, I would think someone more experienced who has had other canopies can give you much better advice.

Re: [rendezvous] OSP Sizing
I usually jump a 265 Trango and just got a 225 Troll. A 245 would probably be the sweetest spot. I weigh about 150lbs.

What kind of jumps will you do?

Re: [andrej] OSP Sizing
Mostly slider down, but occasionally terminal as well. Can't afford to
have different rigs so want something that meets both requirements
half way or may be leaning a bit more towards slider down.

Can you afford to have different kidneys?

Re: [rendezvous] OSP Sizing
Im also really interested, im planning to buy my first rig this week, but can't decide in a OSP 225 or 245.. I weight 65kg, and talked with some friends that told me that an 245 it's a bit too big, but can help in some hard spots..

Re: [matheus13] OSP Sizing
If you're not sure on sizing, I'd always err on the larger size.

Larger canopies have lighter wing loading, which basically puts everything in slow motion. Lower stall speed, easier to sink, more time to react, more time to make decisions in flight.

The only real reason to go with the 225 is if you expect you'll have to fight wind to get to your LZ a lot, in which case I'd probably go with a higher glide canopy over the OSP anyway.

What if you want to get into ultra low freefall? Is the smaller canopy getting to line stretch faster worth the reduced amount of fabric over your head?

Also, isn't there a new OSPeak something canopy that is objectively better than the OSP coming out soon?

Re: [idemallie] OSP Sizing
Honestly, even at ultra low altitudes (sub 200') I'd rather have the extra square footage for the crash landing.

If you're looking at really super low stuff, then you're on your own. :)

The OSPeak isn't a replacement for the OSP. It's meant as a separate canopy in the product line. The OSP will still be the first choice for super low stuff and tight, technical landing areas.

Re: [TomAiello] OSP Sizing
why not upsize by one? in the pacific northwest i sure as shit was glad that i had an OSP 285 sometimes =)

if youre jumping in grassy knolls then i guess it wont matter as much

Re: [matheus13] OSP Sizing
I agree with the others. Go with the bigger size. Ive never said to myself "I wish this thing was faster." But often say "I wish this was bigger." I have a 265, gonna go with a 285 next time the money comes around.

Re: [rendezvous] OSP Sizing
Than go for a 245 and get an extra slow slider with it.
"OSPeak" is a new canopy that is still in the test phase, as Tom said it will not replace OSP. More info during the next months...

@Matheus13... In your case a 225 would be ok!

Rendezvous, I'm not sure if you sorted this out, but "Andrej" who is replying to your question is the general manager of Atair, the manufacturer of the OSP.

Maybe somebody should make him a fancy title, like Robi's for example?
