BASE Beginners

Shortcut
Experienced skydiver, neophyte BASE student.

New member to the forum, old skydiver. I have made my decision to learn this as well as I can. I have no timeline to get ready, have not found a mentor yet.

What appeals to me the most with it is the planning and perfectionist attitude in preparing and executing jumps.

I have now read all the articles and most of the new postings on this forum. Thanks for all the contributions. This is highly informative and helpful. For a starter now, I will be finding a place to offer ground services. If there is anyone around PNW that needs an extra person, Please contact me.

Willing to learn from bottom of ladder.

Lesson #1: Find the appropriate sub-forum to post your request.

GO!

Sounds like a good attitude!

Also, why not the hangout? Doesn't almost literally anything go here?

First lesson taken.

I wasn't sure since I am not even a beginning BJ in training yet. So many of these posts involves BASE, so..

Next one will be at correct place.

(For now) Blue Skies) WinkWink

Oh please, give him a break. Who cares where he posted it.
Lesson 1: be nice.

He's Swiss, they tend to have their own way to be niceWink

Lesson 2: Stop saying blue skies.

Don't worry, we all did it at one point.

LOL.

Lesson #2 is received and noted.

I am still too hooked on the sky to let it go and need wingsuit education. I want to take a FJC in ID and then follow up in Kjerag and China later on.

My timeline is 3-4 years.

Thanks to you all.

Projected timelines can skew one´s priorities. be very careful Or dedicate/educate one´s self to the dream achievement 100%. A timeline-ing student is perhaps the #1 nightmare of Mentors.
Take care,

First thing to do is throw any projected timeline out the window, along with $3 words, and any expectation that you're invited to future BASE events.
Find someone around your area, talk to them, buy a 12pack of beer and go ground crew.
The rest will sort itself out.

Re: [FIREFLYR] Experienced skydiver, neophyte BASE student.
I HAVE a timeline and will stick to it. As I get to wingsuit stage, I will also do FjC off span. I have gotten hold of 10 books of base, including that little manual from the 80's, which I bought in -88.
This will happen and plenty fold. I have seen the Perrine bridge and climbed close to the area as well.

I don't throw $3 words around and know my place. If that what you are used to, have no fears of me. If all it takes is buying a 12-pack at a social, I would consider myself among wrong people. Too little beer and too low of a price to get in. To be honest, I don't really like that kid of stuff without proper bonding first.

Finally, I am not looking for anyone to pat me on the back and neither am I waiting for any "invitations". I know very well that I am not exceptional in any ways and would not have it any other way.

This. Remember that even after you plunk down a credit card and pay somebody to teach you to jump off a bridge, you're still going to have to figure out who you're going to jump with back at home.

What J is suggesting is not at all complicated and is a great start. Really, it is probably the best start.

experienced on dropzone it says you have 150 jumps and asking basic questions about 7 cell vs 9 cell and you will not touch base with a ten foot pole for at least 3 years. maybe come back then

Having a "plan" is good. But having a "timeline" invites tragic failure.

I think you've got a great attitude and approach. Im not sure what type of medicine you practice, but basically the responses youre getting are from people who are the equivalent of attendings rolling their eyes at an excited med student. Keep getting recurrent skydiving and checking in here to learn more. Nothing wrong with having a timeline, but just make sure youre ready for the next step in the process each time. Smart well meaning doctors plow in for the same reason DZ lifers do ( I know of three so far that died WS base jumping). Good luck, and have fun with each step in the process!

I agree with some of what you are saying. Nothing wrong with wanting to learn but having timelines and attitude can go a long way. You are right I am an attending new jumper. Difference is I know it and have over 1000 BASE jumps and he is an experienced skydiver with 150 jumps.
Your attitude if that is the right word for it can either keep you alive or kill you real quick.
I never planned on wing suit BASE jumping or ski base but it fell into place.
I got into climbing to be able to climb and jump towers. Took me over 5 years to get to do my first jump last weekend at castleton. I'm pretty stoked on the accomplishment for myself. If my timeline was to free solo I would be dead. Bird shit is slippery. It's a 5.9 let alone 5.13 the only 1 or two people have ever done.
Your the moderator/expert so encourage whatever you want.

Sorry I dont think the medical training example was super clear. Basically I was agreeing with exactly what you said. Just reminding him hes back at square 1, newb, wuffo status (medical student) and his excitement and initial questions make us grizzled old jumpers (attending/senior physicians) cringe and roll our eyes, as happens with most new jumpers who post their excitement and future plans on this site.

And congrats on castleton. Ive been wanting to get AA for a while myself.

Re: [DrSher] Experienced skydiver, neophyte BASE student.
I HAD a timeline too.

I now have 2 titanium rods and a screw in my left femur and had a 2 year recovery on my left foot after crushing it in the same accident. I wasn't supposed to walk again.

My timeline got seriously changed after I did. Not discouraging you, I eventually made it to the Perrine, took a course and bought gear. I have yet to do a local jump as I won't go alone, and through many obstacles (low light, weather, ttiming, etc) I haven't had the chance yet.

The skydiving is fun, the getting to know people and hearing Base stories are fun. Get there when you get there, and asking now and helping out isn't a bad start. Just be patient unlike me and hopefully you get there in better shape then I did.
