2016 fatality final count contest
So it's already the worst year on record, but how bad will it really get? We're at 31 at the writing of this post, which already increases the previous high of 27. The last 5 years people have died in sept, October, and nov every year. What will the final tally be? Tie breaker will be how many fatalities in December?

Winner gets a take-away static line kit and a stash bag.*

*Both winner and myself must be alive to eligible to claim prize. All entry's must be received prior to sept 15.

I would say someone put a spell on the wingsuitflyers, and now one by one is going in!

When it all comes down to the person it selves. It is not the conditions or equipment, it has to go Darwins way. Thats it.

I think it will be a good fall, and hopefully the rest is set back, and waiting for a new season, and everything is forgotten as the weather gets warmer, and the head is lighter.

Good luck everyone

More useless than the 50 posts saying slow down and try to learn after every fatality, which no one then listens to? More useless than the "stay safe out there" post I've done several time? There will be more fatalities this year, and it's better to acknowledge that. There are probably 50-100 people out hiking in Europe today going to proximity fly saying "it can't happen to me". I only saw two useless posts this thread, and they're both quoted above. If you don't want to participate in the contest, then don't.

I'm with you mate. Telling people to fly safe and play safe is having zero effect. Our sport by it's very nature is dark. Maybe, just maybe this thread makes one person think differently. They think differently and change their approach then maybe that mindset can be passed on to others. I know one thing for certain. I won't be going in on a WS jump this year so fuck it. Wink

Re: [hjumper33] 2016 fatality final count contest
Earlier this year I expected at least twenty people to die in August and September. Looks like I was optimistic.

The fact that that level of carnage is now considered normal just shows how idiotic this has become. I hate to break it to all of the guys trying to make a name for themselves- the pinnacle of this sport was hit five years ago. Everyone else has just been playing follow the leader but with progressively less preparation. There is nowhere else to go but in.

I watched a video last week of a guy flying his Phantom through the crack... He had been flying wingsuits in BASE for two weeks. I was also the only one that happened to say I had just watched a near fatality. Post after post, included experienced jumpers, congratulated him on the accomplishment. There is almost nothing to do but laugh- over and over again people keep acting surprised when their game of Russian roulette doesn't turn out well.

There is a collective denial of what is going on. The overwhelming number of accidents are being driven by ego and sheer stupidity. The most common limiting factor in progression and growth is not an individual's potential but rather his ego.

If you don't think that ego is the driving factor in this, then I have some great oceanfront property here in AZ to sell you.

Re: [matt_f_001] 2016 fatality final count contest
I was just thinking the other day about a windy 5 way by a bunch of newish jumpers circa 2008 at the perrine that you might remember. I think the minimum off heading was 120 degrees, and two guys doing unpacked jumps had a canopy collision.

I cant claim I wasnt an idiot when I started jumping, and I definitely took more chances than I do now. I think the difference is, when I was at the youngest and dumbest point of my career, I was doing that stuff slider down of bridges. Today, theyre doing it with giant wingsuits in the mountains. The decisions are probably about the same, but the environment is much less forgiving.

Well. If even betting on who is going in first, or extrapolation of the death count does not help, all these posts are useless. I still stand by my original opinion. And no, I never think it can not happen to me. But I put it in a drawer somewhere. Let's face it, if you think you will die on every jump (which can of course) you quit.

This post is the final proof that whole BFL has to be removed as it completely lost the purpose . It is pure disgrace to read all this.

BFL had his reason for maybe first #100 cases. Now , not any more at all since main so called reason was to ''learn'' from it....

I am not going to describe why whole comments are plane stupid as I hope that every person will find reason it self after thinking for 1 minute. ( 1 sec is way to optimistic sadly )

Re: [robibird] 2016 fatality final count contest
99% disagree with you. Sad? yes. Do we need the historical record? of course we do. It's like you are saying the government should stop keeping track of plane crashes or car crashes.

edited to be more clear/polite-
i get that you are upset that the discussion around fatalities and the BFL has been reduced to placing bets on rather morbid predictions. I chalk it up to "graveyard humor" which most people accept is part of the sport. hjumper is trying to get the point across in a novel way.

the BFL isn't going away. jumpers will not stop having morbid senses of humor. if someone feels uncomfortable about these posts, they don't have to read them.

Fanaya appears to be the winner. My whole point of starting this thread/contest was to bring attention to the ridiculous rate people were dying this summer and hopefully give people pause. There were 31 fatalities on Aug 31, and only 6 more for the rest of the year, far fewer than I had even expected. We have a disturbing trend of the number going up almost every year, and very rarely go back down. Its shocking to think of the possibility to 37 more fatalities next year, so lets due our best to watch out for ourselves, and our friends as well.

I think this video is relevant -- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hER0Qp6QJNU

  • Form meaningful relationships with other jumpers

  • Learn how to give constructive feedback well (identify that you want what's best for the person, you want to see them achieve their goals and be happy; yet when they do action X, it can have consequence Y, and you'd be really happy if they did Z going forward).

  • Follow that constructive feedback up with genuine actions that reflect that you take interest in said jumper and include them in some fulfilling base missions away from the typical hustle and bustle.

  • Be sure to give specific positive feedback when you see your new friends take smart approaches to progression

  • People only take constructive feedback when they trust the person who is giving it to them. Trust does not come easy. It comes from investing in relationships, genuinely caring about other people, and doing actions that convey this.

  • Nah, rather shit-talk about your own mishaps or failures, which to be honest, everyone has. Yup, we're human, but the youngin's are all rockstars!

  • Learn how to give constructive feedback well (identify that you want what's best for the person, you want to see them achieve their goals and be happy; yet when they do action X, it can have consequence Y, and you'd be really happy if they did Z going forward).

  • Nah, not when you care, maybe give tips or pointers, make an effort, take or post videos or pictures, and still you get ridiculed or not taken seriously.

  • Follow that constructive feedback up with genuine actions that reflect that you take interest in said jumper and include them in some fulfilling base missions away from the typical hustle and bustle.

  • Nah, they'd rather do a gainer on their 3rd jump from a cliff, after doing their 2nd and overall 16th jump from a rock, after you've already said "Maybe wanna go slick, you know, just to get back into the swing of things?". That is after you helped them pack their PC's, telling them "There's people that would use the opportunity to yank your packjob and throw it into the bushes".

  • Be sure to give specific positive feedback when you see your new friends take smart approaches to progression

  • Honestly, I couldnt care less anymore at this point, because "Fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice, shame on ME!". Why the FUCK should one care anymore?

People only take constructive feedback when they trust the person who is giving it to them. Trust does not come easy. It comes from investing in relationships, genuinely caring about other people, and doing actions that convey this.

Yes, and that is exactly why I only jump with my friends, or alone by myself. If someone asks for help, appreciates it and heads what I have to give, sure, vhy not. But your average "muppet". NAH, not anymore. I'm not letting my day be ruined by some twat. Even the guys that only come out only when THEY want. Fuck that. Seriously. Not my cup of tea.

Now roast me all you want, I couldnt give a rat's ass!

So stupid. You're playing a tasteless game of bounce bingo while chastising younger jumpers for thinking its a joke. Irony, hypocrisy, and idiocy defined, all in one short post.

Youve obviously never played bounce bingo. You pick specific people, not general numbers over a year. I think the joke he was walking about was more "how younger jumpers dont take the death aspect of jumping seriously". Dont worry, I type stuff before thinking sometimes too.

What's most offensive is the amount of stupid cunts who are forgoing a steady progression for the fast track Via Ferrata - Brevent style journey, so who gives a shit about a morbid sense of humour. Look back in a few years and tally the losses. The humour blackens.

It usually stops being a joke when they are the ones who lose a friend... or in that instant before they impact.
