Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
Im not gonna name any names here, because this just happened.. but there was a cliffstrike at Dumpster today.. Jumper pitches early and has a 180 and gets hung up in a tree in the middle of the wall. Very lucky to be alive.. he flew right into the only tree on the wall.. there was just one impact.. he didnt slide down the wall just went right into the tree..
https://youtu.be/GmUP6BufZnE
everybody out there: The Dumpster in Lauterbrunnen is not a beginner jump. I think people often underestimate this exit.. especially know what your doing when going slick.. or maybe dont go slick .. ..

we will have a discussion with all the people involved on the jumpload on our podcast tonight.. it will not be the usual bullshit talk but a serious discussion about the dumpster and the rescue..

so heres the recording of our podcast showing pov footage of the impact https://youtu.be/GmUP6BufZnE

well we dont hav Video.. except for our jump

at exactly second 25 in the Video you can see the green lede where he landed

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=daQ5R0jUgsQ note that we were fine.. it was the guy that came after..

but i think he was a little unstable when he pulled after 4 sec delay.. and then subterminal opening with slider up is oviously not gonna help with heading performance

Lots of tree landings there too. Because the exit itself is so easy what people don't seem to consider is that the talus is very high, so if your start sucks (ie. lots of people) you'll be opening near the cliff or low on the tree slope or both.

And boxers? Dude if you're not naked there's no point!

this is from Clinton Parkers fb page Friends & family I did my last ever BASE jump yesterday, I made a bad judgement call and jumped without my tracking suit, when in freefall I realized I was not going to clear the talus so I deployed my parachute which opened 180 degrees sending me straight back into the wall, I then slid down the wall and my parachute got caught on a small tree saving me from falling to an almost certain death, I was rescued by helicopter and taken to Bern hospital where I had surgery on my elbow, I have a fractured spine and a swollen ankle BUT I am alive!! Please keep any negative comments to yourself as I have enough to deal with right now

Re: [GreenMachine] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
its even easier than that,

you copy the link to the video:

https://youtu.be/GmUP6BufZnE

you add the tag '?t=' at the end and write the desired time afterwards in minutes and seconds '28m48s', so ?t=28m48s

add this to the end of the link and you are done ;)

That is why we did not want to make a chart in the first time...
The chart is only how we see it. The Exit at dumpster es more easy, you have a lot of space and at la mouse, the rockdrop is shorter. That is how we defined it. But as said, these are only recomendations. And it says in the chart that this applies for tracking we are talking of tracking with tracking gear and not slick...

I would not recomend to jump any jumps slick exept maybe yellow ocean and the old nose exits anyway :-)

i also noticed that the rating in the PDF on the website does not match with the printed rating that is hanging at the dumpster exit.

the pdf states dumpster exit blue, and freefall blue, but when you are at the exit it says exit blue and freefall red due to the 45° talus that starts rather high up...

Re: [biker117] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
I did my last ever slick jump in the valley from that exit. I was quite surprised that the guys i was with thought it was a good idea.

Its the closest i've ever opened to a cliff. If i had had an issue with a 180 ,or anything more than i a 90 i would have been likely in shit. And for slick, my track was not that bad on that particular jump. Just not good enough. My exit was running and went well, I'd hate to know what would have happened if my exit had been poor.

I immediately went back to yellow ocean and started my progression again from scratch with my suit on, and since then i never jumped without it from slider up big cliffs.

I am a true beginner in base, so my opinion is that of a layman, but still, I don't think anyone with low numbers should be jumping this exit slick. Maybe no one except experts should be jumping it slick. Its too dodgy.

Re: Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
self evaluation is a lost art. most of the time you're only going to kill yourself. be honest with yourself if you want to survive. if you need a chart to tell you what you can do, you're doing it wrong.

the SBA work hard to guide, but guidance is not law.

Re: [OLopez] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
i think the rating on dumpster is pretty accurate. mostly due to its great flat exit.

theres a lot of issues though with people thinking jumping "slick" means you're just out to have a good time in civies clothes.. which is contrary because you should actually have a solid base and be trying to fly your body harder and more efficiently according to your sub terminal speeds as they build up.

launch is everything, so if you launch dumpster like you're having a fun slick zoo dive, sure its a red jump because that talus will come up fast and you'll open with zero room for error even with super fast recovery from off headings or god forbid twists.

but if you bust your nut exiting just about the right time, and track like a mofo, you could safely track dumpster for decades, naked let alone slick.. without issue.

not a commentary on this jump specifically, i really didnt dissect the footage all that much to be honest.. and wish the injured party a speedy recovery.
Shortcut
Re: [smak] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
Its not the 90's anymore we now have tracking suits to help you increase the distance from the wall (Which should be your priority) If your jumping slick in the valley you obviously have a lot of skill to maintain a great distance from the wall or you have no idea about Base jumping..

You see it time and time again people trying to be awesome and jump slick only to end up in the trees or on the small rocky talus way up high.. Its not a good thing if you call the AG out in a helicopter and they see you in nothing makes us all look like Dickheads..

One more thing how many jumps did this guy have ? I heard something like 3o base jumps and he is in the valley..How times have changed for the WORSE...

Also Pulling after 4 secs packed slider up whilst jumping slick is most likely why you had this accident also the fact he has low Low jumping numbers..

Glad he is alright but looks like his career is over before it even begun for what a cool video jumping slick....

Sad really

Yeah sure, if you have good skills, jump sensibly and always aim for performance that's true.

But those aren't the people floating through LB every day, and those aren't the people the ratings were written for.

Re: [flooooooo] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
Mmm, all these colours. Whatever colour, if you dump after 4 seconds slider up you are prone to get snivelling and off heading. There you go.

Re: [blitzkrieg] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
Thank you E.

When I composed these charts a few years ago, I collected input from many experienced jumpers and tried to come up with a common denominator. Since everybody's abilities and perceived difficulty differ, self evaluation should determine the final judgement call, and these charts should only be used as a rough guidance.

If there's a consensus that some ratings should be updated I'm happy to do that.

Cheers

Re: [biker117] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
He was in shallow brakes, right? He could have packed in deep brakes and given himself a much better chance of turning it around or at least a slower impact, especially with an OSP.

The common advice seems to be SU = shallow brakes but I think using deep brakes all the time could have prevented quite a few recent cliff strikes or at least changed them from fatalities to injuries.

Yes, but the chart for sure was not written with slick tracking in mind.

Careful with quotes like that. You will end up with knuckle heads all switching to deep brakes slider up and fucking themselves up. Remember your control lines drive your slider and sliders can do funny things when you fuck with brake settings. Maybe you should have said people should consider tuning their slider up brake settings the way they do their slider down uber super deep brake settings.

Re: [Fledgling] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
I think in this case there was not much planning going on for the jmp anyway.. obviously the jumper pulled quite early due to nonexisten track and poor launch.. a strong good exit would have already put him 30 or so meters further out from the wall by the time he was pulling.. then he didnt seem to be very stable which also doesnt help heading performance at all..

from the ground it was clearly visible how the canopy surged strongly to the wall after opening.. in that case a different brake setting would have maybe given a little bit more margin to react but still..
Shortcut
Re: [Fledgling] Cliffstrike Dumpster Lauterbrunnen 09.05.16
I've done most of my SU jumps this last year in deep brakes with no major changes in openings or stuck sliders, and I know I'm not the only one. I've had a handful of hung up sliders maybe 2-3 feet above the links on my Blackjack but that happened in shallow brakes too. With a modern vented canopy I don't think just moving the brake line a couple inches can cause the slider to prevent your canopy from inflating. It shouldn't affect the slider as much as using a tailgate plus single/double direct control, which I've seen a number of jumpers use.

I understand it is possible. Just cautioning against blanket statements is all. There are canopies in use that won't appreciate it.

The first shows were a mess.. but for this last one #008 i think we already changed it quite a bit..
Its a work in progress.. we will streamline the show more.. more structure.. we will have good topics with interesting guests and less bullshit..
Theres a chance to have a real good conversation that people might be interested in if you get the right people on.. and Lauterbrunnen is definitely a good place for a show like this.. close to the action and a lot of different people stop by..

So to be honest ive never done a podcast before.. but its fun and we will work on it.. Instead of calling it a shit show.. which it might be.. id much rather appreciate some constructive criticism to help improve it.. Tongue
