What's the worst decision you made during a BASE jump?
it seems like some people here really think their shit dont stink, I disagree. Lets fan the flames and air it out, the worst decision I made was doing 2 rappel's down an unknown short cliff hoping for an exit and jumping with a 42" PC on a wall now known as Never Never Land. No injury.

I thought I had to fart on top of tombstone,
nope it was shit.

One time, I nearly drowned myself.

Re: [JBag] What's the worst decision you made during a BASE jump?
Tried to hook a 180 below treetop level on tombstone after catching an updraft. Actually, the bad idea was jumping in a "lull".

Jumped into a headwind nearly blown back into the structure

Went too long turning it around at the bridge, and turned in too deep of brakes. Stall turned 90 degrees at about 40-50' and the surged out of that into the ground. Not fun to see your canopy completely in front of you at 30'. Limped away with a sprained foot. Jump 2... You live and learn, hopefully...

Jumped with JEWBAG TongueTongueTongue

Trying to kick out line twist instead of using every last bit of fight in me to climb my motherfucking lines and turn that bitch around.

Lessons learned:

No, I'm not special
Murphy is never far away
14 seconds with multiple line twists and a 180 sounds like a lot of time - it was not...
Striking a wall really hurts!
It's nice to have friends who are good climbers!
Some jumps are safer pulling dirty low than filthy high - and it might not be obvious.
I was lucky as fuck that day Cool

Bad Decisions
Took too short of delay, opened with off-heading + linetwsists
only by luck did I not die blindly flying between guyed wires.

Another time had off-heading + linetwsists, made the mistake
of getting out of the twists before correcting the heading,
snagged the lightning defuser, tore my left stabilizer off.

Running exit, did not pace off my steps, hit a bracket
with my boot and went off head down at 320 feet.

Allowed a visiting newbie jumper to use his own pack job
which he set both brakes wrong, on opening both popped,
jumper did nothing and immediately sank into a tall tree.

This is valid! But b/c Patto's a cunt, I saw him pack a clamp into his rig.

Jumped in NUKING winds which had me dragged through a mud field for 100 yards after landing.

Start a "post your worst BASE jump decision video" thread and maybe i'll share! I know everyone out there has a few videos in their collection they aren't proud of.

Me too

Re: [JBag] What's the worst decision you made during a BASE jump?
loosing my toggles and forget to pull down the risers at landing....I did a hole in the field (soft, fortunately)

alone on a B, jumping the wrong side, in a hurry, with the wrong mindset, turning in freefall, opening looking at the windows...my canopy kissed gently the B, which didn't like it e push it away...

Re: [JBag] What's the worst decision you made during a BASE jump?
After 3 successful jumps in fairly windy conditions at the Perrine I borrowed a friends rig that was just one size canopy larger than mine. After turning it around I was still moving backwards at a rate I wasn't in love with, but I thought was okay. I was also landing on the beach and trying to negotiate the trees and water line. I ended up stalling the canopy at about 15' and immediately was on the ground before any form of intentional PLF could be performed. Hit the back of my head pretty hard, and I was tense and my tongue went between my molars on both sides. CHOMP! couldn't eat anything with any seasoning or acid for a few days. I shouldn't have jumped for a lot of reasons. But I learned my lesson with a generally okay outcome.

Flat-spined over terrain in China during a transition to my back In the one place you do not want to get hurt or need a rescue... Recovered immediately but needed new pair of underwear as well.

Lessons learned.

1. When you are peaking before a jump.. take a few deep breaths and take a sec to get focused.
2. Just because you can do something, does not mean you should. (real lesson here)
3. Your Not dead until your dead. ( thanks chuck!)

Was in LBV, jumped Jungfrau for the first time and was spent after that hike (that jump went well though), so I decided to take the rest of the afternoon off and started poppin bottles. Then got invited to a sunset jump at Gimmelwald and unwisely accepted. Was pretty fuckin lit and to make matters worse decide to huck a two-way, and even worse I decided to throw a front into the mix. Ended up with the attached pic due to poor (read: no) planning but luckily was able to clear the situation before it became a full-blown entanglement. Mucho douche-baggery on my part for jeopardizing the other person like that.

Grabbed the release tab on line release toggle by mistake last night. First rear riser landing, missed the light pole and oncoming car though Smile

I was climbing a new A for the second time and my buddys pins popped so he climbed down. I was to lazy to climb any further and I was jumping this time so I went from about 160' with headwind over 30 ft trees. I watched the lights on the corner of the A go right beside me as I opened and went straight down. I skimmed my feet on the trees and landed fine on the dirt road. Everything was fine but so many things could've gone wrong.

Did you keep the other toggle?
Do you know about steering, and then flaring with one toggle and one riser?
Shortcut
Re: [hookitt] What's the worst decision you made during a BASE jump?
I did not
I do, but it all happened pretty quick, the light pole and oncoming car sort of took all my concentration. So it was just land with both risers

Re: [JBag] What's the worst decision you made during a BASE jump?
Jumped a technical free stander with pretty limited experience (14 jumps). Pretty windy and lots of stuff to avoid in the landing area. I hesitated on a turn after fumbling a toggle. Carved my turn into a telephone pole & powerlines. Lost a brand new canopy, smashed up my legs, ...did not get electrocuted to death.

Noticed I was getting drive on opening and ignoring it for a Moab trip instead of correcting setting. We packed at night under a street light while trying to hurry to grab beers at the bar. Here is the point I lost my glasses (next day) before breaking tip / fib while trying to squeeze in one more jump before catching flight home.

I had a bad feeling that morning to just call it a weekend and ignored it ....

Yes, four surgeries with an ankle fusion made everything ok.

Now I have bragging rights with the ladies that I have a 13" rod....

Re: [JBag] What's the worst decision you made during a BASE jump?
Jumped a 300ish cliff (quarry) in the middle of the night with no prior knowledge of lz, area, or anything. Not to mention that I only had around 10-15 jumps at the time. I was nowhere ready to face a 180 if that happened.
Then there was the time I jumped a 190' S on a static line and ended up catching my foot on the bridle and flipped and deployed on my back.

You live and learn (what not to do).

Re: [JBag] What's the worst decision you made during a BASE jump?
Jumped a nice freestander in less than ideal wind conditions. Problem was not the wind, but the fact that it was surrounded by high voltage power lines. Couldn't make it to the road, so I got lucky crabbing it in and landing sideways between lines. My PC did touch one...just a little bit. pucker hard
