Briddle Holding for PCA
I have seen couple of jumpers holding the briddle during a PCA in such a way that has the potential to break fingers or snag :). See pictures attached. Any thoughts? This should be common practice by now, I would think, and yet I keep seeing some jumpers holding the briddle this way.

I think people underestimate the snatch force of a human dropping a few feet....its either going to take u with or take a finger with it lol

Re: [Skez] Briddle Holding for PCA
yep. very high forces involved. Play with the calculator on the following link to get an idea of the forces involved. The calculator gives you force in newton. Use Google to convert to pounds force if lbs is more intuitive.

Surely someone has unintentionally followed a jumper off an exit or lost a finger at some point or something along those lines...everything else has been done lol

I hear you and agree with you. But I think what he meant to say is that if the briddle gets snagged it will pull hard due to the forces involved; not necessarily that the one providing the PCA would intentionally catch all of that load.

I have also noticed inexperienced PCA "providers" tend to prematurely drop the jumper. And the way I think this is happening is because the first relatively hard briddle pull you would experience comes right after pins are popped and briddle reaches full length. You will experience the force of about 8 lbs (or whatever the canopy weight is) being dropped a few feet. The inexperienced will let go of the briddle at this time thinking the job is done now. The experienced PCA provider will hold on to the briddle after this initial pull and continue holding for full line stretch. Following line stretch you will then feel the 2nd significant force i.e. the force of the jumper after dropping a few feet. This is the force involved that is very high and can rip a lot of things off. I am not counting the force to pull pins or peel velcro off as this is an insignificant force.

If your not experiencing just a tiny bit of friction burn on the fingers, Your not holding-on long enough before letting your buddy go .

Still not as bad as what popped up on my news feed a couple weeks back... Crazy No "S folds" just straight through his hand.. And then of course he dropped it halfway to line stretch.

You let go a bit early! Tongue

Personally I wouldn't hold the PC by the mesh like that. In my opinion there is a higher potential for the mesh to catch on something(finger).
I hold the top of the cap lightly.

Interesting he teaches to drop bridle.....

Bridle Assist aka PCA
I personally think that using the bridle
to do more of the work is better cause:
1. Bridle is $20, PCs are $75 to $250
2. Bridle is 1500 LBs, PCs tear easy
3. Jumper is open higher/faster

Although I have seen at the Perrine
where in a head wind getting jumper
open lower/later is what is wanted.

This is what I teach also, except that bridles are more likely to be 1000lb.

I know several people who've broken fingers, and one case in which a jumper got pulled off the exit point (from a sub 200 cliff, actually).

Fortunately, the PCA holder was both very experienced and very athletic, and was uninjured in the resulting (emergency) deployment.

If you're referring to the incicent in California from '13 or '14, it was a direct bag, not a PCA

And subsequently lead to said jumper freefalling that object multiple times.

Re: [jpengel] Briddle Holding for PCA
Bagged jumper had been free falling that exit point many times previous. Asked holder to tie off. So did multiple others. If using direct bag it should be tied off w 0 slack to drag jumper of also bag holder should be tied off especially since there were multiple anchor point w lanyards.imho. 622
