First jump at Royal Gorge? Impressive. That's a gnarly bridge!

Not so fast... there may be some earlier jumps.
I read a blurb a while back mentioning a fixed object parachute jump by a woman decades earlier. Not sure all the details behind it other than it was to test parachutes. In the blurb it mentioned her name, the type of object, the height and the date.

I'll hold off a couple more days to see if anyone else has any guesses. I'll see if I can find any more information on the details too.

Not first female base jump but it looks like that Ulla-Stina Östberg was the first woman off the Troll on 18th of June 1981. Would be interesting to know if she was the first woman to jump off an E?

Re: [maretus] BASE History: First Female BASE jumper
Based on my google research... Jean did an interview where she talked about heading to Arizona to jump off a cliff for an HBO special with Carl and his crew. I think this was 1980 and she said she jumped a bridge on the way for her first base jump, so I can only take an educated guess of what object that was.

It's also interesting that the first person to jump from the US seems to be a woman. Mary Jobe

A side note: Carl Boenish should be on the list. I see the notation in the upper right corner but he jumped Troll Wall before he jumped Staubben. I think Jean was first off with Carl right behind. I think they actually made 2 jumps from Troll then he went to Stabben and died. Then Eric Fenze jumped. So I think the order should be Jean, Carl, Eric.

As far as I know you have the order right. But you could Facebook Eric and ask him. He probably remembers.

I guess I've kept everyone in suspense long enough. haha!

I came across this snipit about an early tower parachute jump by a little known aviator named Amelia Earhart. Shocked

In reply to:
In 1934, Stanley Switlik and George Palmer Putnam, Amelia Earhart’s husband, formed a joint venture and built a 115 foot tall tower on Stanley’s farm in Ocean County. Designed to train airmen in parachute jumping, the first public jump from the tower was made by Ms. Earhart on June 2, 1935. Witnessed by a crowd of reporters and officials from the Army and Navy, she described the descent as “Loads of Fun!”

I also came across this NY Times article (which I don't have access to)

Is this the first female BASE jump?

Maybe, maybe not....
upon further research I found a photo which looks a lot like the parachute jump ride at Coney Island. So maybe it doesn't qualify as a BASE jump but cool history none-the-less.

Eric made his jump the day after Carl died from Stabben.

I know one who have the original logbook if you need references.

Watch this video and then decide whether she qualifies.

Unpacked jumps don't count for your base number. I don't think it counts unless you actually "exit" an object with some part of your body.

Totally agree, definitely not a BASE jump as defined by the criteria set out by Carl, Jean and the originals which stated that to qualify as a BASE jump the canopy had to be packed.

Re: [nickgreen] BASE History: First Female BASE jumper
So, that means some logged basejumps that was not a base jump.

Who could possible have done that?
