Cheapest canopy out there
Hello everyone, soon im going to buy a new canopy and was thinking about the ace or the mayhem. These are the cheapest right? I have read something about a russian manufacturer but couldnt find anything.
Anyway, if someone has experience with these canopys can you give me an advice? I've never jumped any of them, only seen them being jumped and both looked nice.
Thank you

Re: [pedrooliv] Cheapest canopy out there
Not sure about the cheapest but i think if u were to go vented the blackjack is good as most places will charge about 10grand for all them sorta options as in vents etc

And new is probably a good idea as people seem to want way to much $$ for there used canopies

If your goal is to fix the weird presurazion problem fixed on low airspeed openings that you're having with your unvented troll, you might want to think about something vented. Although I have put a few jumps on an ace (I think you were there for that) and it seemed to pressurize better than the troll. I also watched it get pca'd from a 180' E and land with more cells inflated that the lobo Wink

Pressurization problems? Nonsense!! Wink too broke for vents, i'll just stick with Miles packjob for now. The one from adrenalinbase didnt seem to work very well. mmm.. I was only when you jumped *THE* 180 Laugh
Cool, i was thinking about the ace too, specialy after i saw the video of the guy with the mayhem, losing some A lines on opening...
Thanks Daniel

Ace.

I know all the price lists and the Ace is hundreds of dollars cheaper than any other new canopy from a major manufacturer. Plus, it's built by PD, and the quality control (and support afterward if there's an issue with the build) is excellent.

Glide is great, flare is strong, stability in deep brakes is excellent.

If you're looking for an unvented canopy there's really no reason to go with anything else.

Blackjacks look pretty cool but they are a little too expensive for my budget right now. That is true, and i really dont understand why people try to sell their used gear so expensive

Maybe it's tongue in cheek, but I totally disagree with this. My first container was a clapped out $200 velcro Wizard. I put about 100 belly to earth slider down jumps on it, and it did it's job as well as any other new container on the market could have. Next time I go to the bridge in Idaho, I'm probably going to be jumping that container with my Raven III, and it's going to be a lot of fun, relatively safe jumping. Just because it's cheap doesn't mean it isn't an effective tool for the job.

Lol, I was not suggesting you should get a converted skydiving canopy (or a velcro rig). Rather, I think that would be a pretty poor decision, depending on what kind of jumping you are doing. I was just making the point that economical and safe aren't mutually exclusive. I got my Raven for skydiving to stay current on an F-111 7-cell canopy, and given my financial situation, familiarity with the gear I'm using, and comfort level with that particular object, it doesn't make sense for me to wear out my relatively new, vented, expensive canopy which I use for my other jumps.

The post was a little dumb..., but a Nova was a 9 cell ZP canopy built in the very early 90s by Glidepath. It had a small design flaw that caused some of them to collapse, especially under front riser approaches. At the time, it was considered high performance similar to a Sabre, but ever so slightly faster, and not.particularly stable.

People died. Some people lucked out and were only scared. The canopy collapsed and reinflated before landing. A sponsored skydiver in Eloy landed once, took scissors to it and threw one away.

If you opt for a pre-owned Ace (I have two) get one built by PD.
I have one DOM 01/2001 not built by PD and one DOM 06/2001 built by PD. I believe you can tell PD built it if the bar tacks on control line attachment to tail and stabilizer attachments to control lines are blue F thread.
The one DOM 01/2001 needed major repair was sent to PD and they refused to repair it. If the repair requires technical information that PD does not have then you will be out of luck.
I otherwise have no complaints about the ACE canopy.
My other advise would be to buy BASE specific gear no matter the cost unless you plan on jumping spans and water landing your hole life.

Re: [pedrooliv] Cheapest canopy out there
You may want to wait a month or two. I was at Apex a month ago and I talked to Todd, they are coming out with a Harness & Container / Canopy set up at a really low competitive price, basically making it so you don't even consider other gear if you are shopping based on price. Those were the only details I could squeeze out of him. Give him a call to find out their timeline for release / price.

I'll buy new, so it will be PD manufactured. I actually would like to have a skydive reserve for that. Thanks for the advice

I thought in the beginning about buying used, but then.. Anyone can lie about the jump numbers on their canopy, about water landings, pretty much about all the beating the canopy has taken, sometimes, you just cant know about those things unless they tell you.
Also, im going to be using the canopy until it dies. If its new, it will give me more jumpsWink

Yeah but you've got eyes to look at it with, hands to touch it with and hopefully a modicum of gear knowledge to evaluate it with. People get in and out of BASE all the time and there is a steady supply of sub 100 jump canopies of the latest design being sold all the time.

Unless you're hung up on colour you'll be able to get a better canopy for less money buying used. And the lifespan will depend far more on how you treat it than whether it had 50 jumps on it when you bought it.

+1 here.
I just bought a used canopy for $1,600.00 that would have sold new for $2,400.00. It is five years old but had 1 jump on it.

I still have mine. I put around 100 jumps on it. It had a bunch of previous skydives on it before I got it. It's not an amazing canopy but it works. Not the best glide and doesn't really flare that well but many BASE canopies are similar. They're built Solid and already have a tail pocket.

Why? Ravens are cheaperLaugh
Shortcut
Re: [pedrooliv] Cheapest canopy out there
the raven is awesome. best terminal openings i have found. And it does well slider down, but it has a bit of surge so it is important to fine tune your Deep brake setting if you are going to jump it off of solid objects slider down. I also recommend to opt for lighter wing loading (bigger canopy).

Some say that the Raven does not flare as well as other canopies out there, but the fact of the matter is that a BASE canopy should be big enough that it is very easy to land softly. A BASE jumper should be able to land a 282ft parachute softly. Same with a 249 sq ft parachute and a 218 sq ft parachute.
