I looked up
crime statistics in Oakland USA and now I wonder why would you leave your gear in your car there?
Seems like jumping in the dark in high winds at a new sight: what could possibly go wrong?
C
I looked up your mom and everyone has been there. It seems she likes jumping in the dark too.
My mom died when I was 8...
Must have visited Oakland without doing her research.
How did you become such a
niedrig arschloch that you say such things to someone who just wonder why someone leaves a rig in their car in a high-crime city?
Perhaps because your post was nothing more than a thinly veiled attempt at calling me an idiot. Your post contributed nothing but I am sure you felt better about doing it. This is the internet after all, and you're posting to basejumper.com, so I know you get your rocks off by telling people on the internet they are wrong and how smart you are.
I saw your post much earlier today and didnt think it was worth replying. It's still not, so i am not replying to you, but I am going to explain how this situation happened so others in the community may learn from it.
Yes, the rig was in my car. A car is a vehicle used to transport people and objects across distances. I think even cavitator can understand this concept since he is from Germany. If you dont feel like walking great distances with your rig it is necessary to use some sort of vehicle and placing your rig inside.
Anyway I used this mode of transportation to get myself and my gear to (EDIT TO REMOVE THE NAME OF A VERY LARGE CITY WITH LOTS OF BIG BUILDINGS BECAUSE SOMEONE PM'D ME ASKING ME NOT TO NAME THE CITY...) the night before to jump a building. Unfortunately we were winded out. I checked into a hotel and took my rig into the hotel room with me as I always do. I have stayed in hotels over 130 nights so far this year alone and I always do this. Because yes, leaving your gear exposed when you don't have to isn't wise. The next morning I checked out and put my rig back in my car. In the back, covered, and not visible. I then had to go to Oakland to see a customer before I went home. I parked my car in front of their business, locked it, and went inside. I dropped something off and came out 3 min later to see a car speeding off. I looked over and saw a window had been smashed and my gear gone.
It's worth noting I have tinted windows and NEVER leave anything of value out in the open and visible. That is asking for trouble. I'm really not sure what I could have done different other than not taking the rig with me on a business trip or taken the rig into my customers office. Taking it inside isn't professional so that's not an option. I am on the road over 50% of the time so not having my rig with me at all would mean jumping a lot less. I have been broken into before in a different city on the other side of the country. (Fort Wright, KY, USA if Cavitator would like to look up the crime stats there.) I'm pretty vigilant unfortunately sometimes shit just happens. We all assume varying degrees of risk.
So what can we take away from this? Thieves suck and are opportunistic. They can strike anytime anywhere even in very short periods of time. I've lived in and spent a lot of time in not nice areas where there is a lot of crime and drug related activity. Many times there is NO logic in when or why people strike. In this case my guess is they saw me get out of my car, which while being 10 years old is still a nice car, and figured I would be inside for a while.
