Head Protection
I am bored...so lets discuss helmets. What are the best helmets out there as of today? Kind of a broad question since many different trade-off: price, weight, protection, look (we all know this is a must Angelic). give it your best shot.

Any testimonies of a particular helmet that saved you from serious head injury or death.

Re: [e.a.hernandez] Head Protection
I have been running a POC multi impact rated skull comp for the last two seasons. Just bought downhill full face skateboarding from TGS (Pass). The Pass is a single impact rated EPS full face with a visor. It's a bit big but offers vastly better protection than a G3 or even a POC. The Pass sits right in between a G3 and a motorcycle helmet in terms of weight and size. I think I'll stick with my POC though albeit wanting a full face for wing suiting.

also...any old tested EPS brain bucket is probably going to out perform even the best multi impact rated helmet

Pro-tec scuffed up and spray painted flat black.

She's cheap, light, stealth, and impact rated.

Light, doesn't make you look like the mushroom from Mario Bros, tough, good value.

I use a ProTec as well. I drew a picture of a cat on it with a speech bubble that says "meow". From what I've seen, they hold Go Pros pretty well. I think the level of protection that it offers if you hit an object, or spiral in with a tension knot would be pretty unacceptable.

I think it is appropriate to choose and change your helmet based on the object you're jumping. But as with most things in BASE, if you can only afford one, get one with solid protection. I think a full face mountain biking/motocross helmet is the most reasonable. I think of BASE as a contact sport, like a combination of NASCAR and rugby. Based on this, the most important priority for me is protection.

After that is weight. I once used a massive motorcycle helmet at the bridge in Idaho for a week (and got laughed at), and I had clicking in my neck when I walked for about six months. Don't get something too heavy, especially if you aren't going to use it because of the weight.

These ones are great:

They work especially well for defending Italian mountaintop monasteries.

Here is a certified helmet (made for paragliding).

"Aramid fiber reinforced outer shell, manufactured in a vacuum high-pressure moulding process, that surpasses even carbon fiber helmets in terms of impact strength and perforation resistance."

- light weight
- extra large field of vision
- certified according to CE EN 966, EN 1077

This one did an excellent job when I crash-landed on blade-like sharp rocks.

50 bucks! You can buy 6-10 of these for the price of one skydiving or paragliding helmet!

Felt just a light concussion for a couple of hours, I'm sure with a skydiving helmet the consequences would have been very serious. Also, the front shield was all scratched up - saved my face from literal "face off". Tried to polish scratches off with a polishing kit, too deep, ended up just buying the same helmet (doesn't look like replacement visors are available). Skydiving helmet companies charge 50 bucks just for the visor!

Your link didn't worked. It sent me to the home page of wallmart.

Anyway, these skydiving helmets are a complete joke... ridiculous both in price and effectiveness

Agreed...they wouldn't even be of any use in the smallest of impacts and wouldnt pass any sort of tests

Protec Shovelhead. Awesome light. Feels like a serious helmet for impact. Visor can be taken off and no snag points where it used to be attached. Smooth all the way around. I love it. Also great helmet for quick motorcycle getaways...

Re: [stinkydragon] Head Protection
As any helmet with decent level of protection, it's bulkier and bit heavier than skydiving helmets, and there's some snag potential on hinge covers. Nice thing is, one doesn't need to make judgement sight inseen - it's available in almost any Walmart with Auto section.
