Beginner BASE course at Tonsai Beach
Somebody is organizing & advertising a beginner BASE course at Tonsai Beach around New Years. I'm rather sick and tired of explaining over and over why such things are a bad idea. Anybody willing to lend a helping hand here?

bsbd!

Beginner BASE course at a slider-down cliff
Sure, I have never been there, but we all know
that most bridges and most antennas are much
much better/reasonable/usual beginner objects
than almost any cliff and/or almost any building.

Tail wind is your friend, solid objects require a
faster response to off-headings because the
amount of time before impact is much less.

When a guy with 700 BASE jumps can hit
the KL Tower then pretending your newbie
is so shit hot that he or she can handle a
180 on a no-slider-cliff is simple hubris or
gross incompetence - take your pick.

Wow. I was there recently for my honeymoon, those cliffs are no joke. The approaches are no joke either (to the well know exit especially). I never got to find out 1st hand of course since it was nuking winds the whole time. Plus- that is somewhere I would REALLY not want to get hurt, you would be very far away from actual medical help if you needed it.

Good luck to those students!

Re: [outrager] Beginner BASE course at Tonsai Beach
Sounds legit, "natural selection base course"...
I don't see a problem, where do I sign up?

Please post regardless.

Re: [outrager] Beginner BASE course at Tonsai Beach
In addition any injury would also be 'problematic', a jumper fell on the approach many years ago and died from his injuries before the boat with the doctor could arrive.

For what looks like a nice over hanging cliff i have seen a large number of jumpers get to spend an afternoon on the wall waiting to be rescued.

Thanks everybody, the school got the wind and promised to change the course somewhat - that is, to bring students with some BASE experience. It may or may not be reasonable enough, but i'll give it a benefit of a doubt and won't post the names now. You can see for yourself in January, i suppose Sly

Medical help in Ao Nang:

First Standard Clinic.
Location: http://goo.gl/maps/lt4XC
Open 24x7
Phone number: 075-695191

Facilities: Ambulance service, XRay and all the required gear to stabilise a patient, apply a cask, administer a rabies shot, hold you hand. It's a small clinic though. Literally walking distance from the boat "station".

There is, of course, the big hospital in Krabi for more serious cases.

Another option is to sail to Phuket which has a big hospital but its 70km away.

Local hospital is not where you want to end up in Thailand!

Nearest ok hospital is in Phuket

Re: [outrager] Beginner BASE course at Tonsai Beach
Well, private & local talks dead-ended, so here's what it will be:

Ratmir Nagimyanov (baseguru.ru) will still go ahead with a course at Ton Sai. At least he has changed it from FJC (advertised on the site as "4 PCA jumps followed by freefall") to a "seminar" for a few of his students with very limited experience, no object avoidance training or practice, and no self-rescue means.

Enjoy the show.

It's okay, he's Russian.

Re: [outrager] Beginner BASE course at Tonsai Beach
Hopefully they dont fuck things up there.
There are already a couple exit points that the locals want closed.

There are usually other jumpers there that time of year so hopefully they'll keep this in line.
