Shortening Brake Lines
Hi,
I believe I need to shorten my brake lines on my Outlaw, especially on slider off jumps. My turns are too long and slow, and the flare feels weak. The canopy does not shut down when I flare before landing. The lack of ability to turn quickly has limited my options at times. I watch other canopies respond quickly and flare powerfully on the same jumps.

My lines don't have any sort of adjustment mechanism like some of the Lobo's do, so does anyone have a good way to shorten the lines with a knot near the brake of some sort? Especially to test my theory? Pictures of how you did it?

Thanks in advance.

Can you not just shorten your toggle stroke with your toggles?

page 10 of the consolidated rigging RAM air manual shows you a way to use a knot for what you are trying to do. On all canopies I have owned so far I have had to shorten the toggle setting by around 4 inches for slider down before I get a good response on the canopy.

Very useful information. I will use this to test my theory. Thank you so much!

I think the outlaw has a different way to cascade the lines that makes it difficult to set like a troll or other BASE canopy. Have you tried emailing Squirrel? they are really good at getting back to people.

Hi,
Yes- their lines are cascaded. I did email them, and they basically said to put more jumps on it. I have like 40 jumps on it though, and the problem is really starting to tweak me out. I could go back and forth a few more times with them, but the end result would be to shorten the lines and try it out so I figure that's what Ill try.

It's common practice to shorten your brake lines at the toggle in order to achieve more control with less toggle input. I took out around 3 inches on the brake lines of my outlaw for slider down.

Like the CR manual says, don't forget to return your brakes to their full length if you jump somewhere like Brento with a long talus to fly over.

Awesome. Thanks.

Re: [JBag] Shortening Brake Lines
Shortening them at the cascade will also affect the brake settings.
I don't think the OP is wanting to change the brake setting, just the overall length. If so, any changes must be made below the brake settings.

A simple way to test your theory is to take a wrap of line around your hand for a jump or 2. This will alter the length by 6-8 inches.
If it helps then make a more permanent adjustment.

Where are your hands positioned when you turn and flare? At your sides, behind or in front of you? This may impact the degree of input affecting the canopy which can lead to faster or slower turns or stronger flares.

My outlaw came with an overhand knot in the end for the toggle, no sewn loop. simply move the overhand knot to lengthen/shorten your control line length.

If your not sure how this is done, best get a buddy to come show you. Its really quite simple but losing a control line would suck!

The correct setting is on that justs sips into a tink on the brakes.
It is a bit longer than doing the Toms way.
Toms way will give one a partial breaking. The spread of the lines will be taking up Length.
With my canopies, 4 inches is the diff from SU vs SD. I dont agree with wrappin the toggle vs having it unwrapped for the flare.
if one using the same toggle stroke for SU/SD you are fucking your self in flare capacity for one of the modus.
