Pc problem - looking for insight
Hey everyone!

Would love to hear from the experienced guys about this (i.e. Tom).

Jumped a 300 footer. Used my standard 46, hand held. Container is a razor with an ultralight OSP 265, I am 165 lbs. I have had this pc for well over a year.

I have attached the link of the vid which i privately posted on youtube.

Of note: it has to be watched in slow motion, one frame at a time. I barely caught it until i slowed it down on my mac.

What you will see. Normal pc throw, pc goes to bridle stretch, pc inflates, pc completely collapses, pc does an impression of a jelly fish, pc re inflates, pc begins to extract canopy.

Showed it to another more experienced jumper who thinks it doesn't seem right as well.

I have jumped this tower numerous times and did notice that I opened lower

Of note, video is unedited, put youtube to slow motion and on HD

Thank you all in advance for your help

What kind of PC is it? Fabric type? Vent? Manufacturer?

Have you checked the center line length?
Shortcut
Re: [TomAiello] Pc problem - looking for insight
Hey Tom

Thx for chimming in!

Pc was built by a local rigger. Not vented. fabric is F-111 (i think). I have not checked the centre line but It seems as though it may be short (judging by the vid). unless I'm wrong in thinking that

Omitted the fact the the pc was built by a local rigger because I want people to watch the vid before forming an opinion,

Thanks again guys!

Re: [traker] Pc problem - looking for insight
Compare the center line length to the length of the bottom skin tapes. Is the center line shorter than the bottom skin tapes? Or exactly the same length? Or longer?
Shortcut
Re: [traker] Pc problem - looking for insight
Wow, you have a lot of faith unguided by the looks in the rigger. Buy a toxic
Shortcut
Re: [TomAiello] Pc problem - looking for insight
just measured it a million times. Of course there some minute differences probably caused by my measuring

Final answer: same length

Re: [traker] Pc problem - looking for insight
How much Tom charge you for this advice and him watching the video?
Shortcut
Re: [traker] Pc problem - looking for insight
you know it kinda looks to me like that little bit of slack that comes into play when the first pin pops
the slack between pins means the bridle is not pulling on the pc for a second and then the pc loads with a nice jerk and pops (like it did) to pull the second pin
now normally the collapse in the dead time between pins isn't that severe but yours was pretty decently collapsed
***if the center line isn't a tad longer than the others, it can be more prone to collapse like that... it's not a huge deal, but it should be just a bit longer than the side tapes from what I remember***
that last part in the asterisks I'm not 100% sure on so correct me if I'm wrong (Tom or someone else who knows better than I do)

Re: [CF36] Pc problem - looking for insight
What you're saying makes a lot of sense. I definitely feel as though the pc collapse was a tad severe.

Not sure how much Tom is charging me. Will have to wait for his reply and see Wink

What pc size and canopy was the other person using?

Re: [clandestino] Pc problem - looking for insight
PC was looking like a jellyfish . So is this the only visual you have made of this ? really we are only talking about 3 seconds of working time for a visual of ' Maybe ' bad mechanical behavior .

also one question ?
How many 3/8" cross tapes, go across top-skin on that 46" PC to form inflation shape ?
.

That is a Big nylon PC . and you one stepped the launch and threw it . Most definitely you were working it ( a 46" solid skin PC ) at a minimum air speed . The PC was inflating and then spilled out some pressure to re-pressure to fill the volume and then it was fine . it did that, and then Right @ 23 seconds you see the center-line shape ( pull down) the PC skin in the center and then all energy is lost in the PC Tow, because your Canopy takes over with your opening and your starting to fly .

Check to see if it is built on the bias as opposed to on the block. how many tapes also and kick back the info.
Measuring the tapes only works on bias constructed PC`s.

All of your videos should always be public, that's how you become a BASE god, make sure to share plenty on Facebook now also, so people know how awesome you are.

serious though.... I'de be curious to see what your buddy did, he seemed to open at the same level. as for the hesitation / collapse you had.

1; was your bridal also made by your rigger?
2; how much "extra" bridal length do you have between your pins?
3; is your bottom pin the first to pop?

after the first pin pop, the bridal unloads noticeably, looks like a wet noodle for a couple frames. with a head high deployment, lets say, you have 12 inch between your pins and pop the bottom first, this is going to create 24 inch of slack before the PC is loaded again, VS 17 inches of slack if you're flat and stable.... snatch force isn't necessarily a bad thing though, not enough and you could get hesitation on the top pin.

Just some extra stuff to look at along with the PC itself Tongue

Re: [DeerBone] Pc problem - looking for insight
Maybe send the pc into a BASE pc manufacturer and pay them a few bucks to inspect and critique your local riggers work.
The feedback may offer some peace of mind.

My friend was using an asylum 46, he flys an OSP 285 and weight 205 lbs.

We have done two ways off this tower in the past where he goes stowed and i go hand held and is always lower.

On this jump he purposely left late but went stowed

In reply to:

bridal is from Kathy, standard morpheus bridle

bottom pin is the first to pop.

length between the pins is standard. nothing extra

In reply to:

8 tapes

So based on the video, do you guys think this is:

1) a bad pc
2) random poor pc inflation
3) me being a nit picky bastard
Shortcut
Re: [traker] Pc problem - looking for insight
rite on, nothing funky going on there it seems... the head high deployment will still allow more slack in the bridal than a flat deployment, not sure how much this affected the pc collapse, but it seems it would play some roll even if not the major one.

1st off . If you have serious concerns of mechanics there is nothing wrong with seeking answers or asking info .

for cross-tapes on the top skin . (That is good ) it has 4 tapes crossing the Diameter / making ( 8 ) radius tapes . that is a big PC .

(imho) . I don't see anything wrong with what I was seeing . You were not Towing behind you anything bad that I saw .
( hand held ) Throwing out that big an anchor ( 46" ) with that little of airspeed is not a clean Tow . in Filling It is going to take shapes, and it going to look fucked-up doing it when you break down the first seconds of it doing it's job .

You threw, it Anchored, and your container opening sequence was put into play . I see nothing wrong with that PC in that Vid .. . It's a big F111 Pilot Chute on a low, go and throw .
( maybe ) There are ways for you to clean-up the Anchor your throwing out . The way you fold, hold, body position, throw it out to present it to anchor and start the sequence of event to the container system . Also you can streamline efficiency of PC ( maybe ) bumping down to a 42" vented .

Your PC did it's job . It just did not do it as pretty as the newer efficient designs of Vented Pilot chutes .
consider . I think people get ( spoiled ) so used to using, seeing so many opening with today's efficient vented PC's that they forget or don't know the old standard of PC looked like doing it's job .

Re: [traker] Pc problem - looking for insight
For completeness it's worth checking the lay of the threads in the PC panels. I believe all the panels should be aligned so that the threads run parallel to a line drawn from attachment point to the centre of the panel (equi-distant from each tape at the edge of the PC). If they are different you will get uneven panel flex as the PC is loaded.

I'm sure someone more knowledgeable can describe this better ;)

Isn't that one of those PC's made by Nick Burden?!?!? Seems as if he is at it again.... That's your problem right there, jumping something made by Black Sheep Rigging. Wink

Hey guys,

Thanks to all of you for chimming in!

Ray - So taking into account what you said about the older styler pc's. You consider the pc action in the vid to be normal.

I trow straight to the side, s fold the bridle and remaining fabric. What techniques do you do and suggest?

PC is not made by Nick Burden. That being said, I'm gonna order me a toxic

Re: [traker] Pc problem - looking for insight
I don't think you're being nit picky at all.

Ya, to most people it's nothing and will work fine, but you lost altitude from that...when some people are free-falling sub 150', that shit makes a massive difference.

EDIT: Do you think pitching the PC more upward (as one would do for low freefall) would decrease the likelihood of this happening?

Also, that little mini-hesitation may have kept you guys further apart :p that was a sketchy 2-way

..." Ray - So taking into account what you said about the older style pc's. You consider the pc action in the vid to be normal " ? .

I say . " YES "
It was just a step & throw on the Exit, and the PC did it's job like it was suppose to .
On a low, Go & Throw . You threw . It Anchored and your Contained was opened with also dragging out your Canopy to start on it's inflation . Your PC did it's job like you wanted it to do . It just did not look the way you 'expected' in 2 the Seconds of watching it .

( Plus ) . There's really not enough Video to make any sort valid conclusion to the Pilot Chute being Bad in construction or Bad in it's inflation habits .
And . Most everything that is fabric and that is inflating and in a moving airstream looks like shit on Video, especially if you break it down to a couple seconds (like here) that your PC was being watched .
