Let go cutaway?
Has anyone ever jumped with a canopy not hooked on to a container, not like the freaky skin attachment, like holding on to the risers? Sounds scary, then you could just let go and open or ride it out like a hoss.

Yes, many years ago with a Mojo 240 and also a friends 'homebuilt' 30 sqm 7 cell canopy. Both were rollovers at the Perrine.

It's called a "para-bill-eject", I believe.

McConkey did at least one of these on Aug 4, 2004. I didn't quite know what I was seeing at first, but something looked "off". Then he tip-toed his landing on the beach, let go of the risers and the canopy just drifted away.

I remember the date specifically because I watched it happen from the LZ after my first ever BASE jump. It was a "holy shit" moment for me, fully eclipsing my own first jump.

Shane humbly mentioned that he didn't "have the guns to try it without a packed rig" on his back and then immediately shifted focus to my jump after learning I'd just made my first.

He did it earlier also. Someone else Packed it without securing the slider to the front risers so it blew half way up on deployment.

I think I remember him having done it before as part of the "don't have the guns" comment. Don't recall the why of it, though.

Re: [Lucid] Let go cutaway?
I did something similar WFFC in Quincy, Illinois, USA in 1991. They wouldnt let me DB-BASE the bungee crane so I did 3 bungee jumps first with a base rig set up for DB.
The first was handheld risers. I think I cracked a fingerbone when the risers got ripped from my hands. the next 2 jumps I cutaway after canopy inflation. End deal is that the DB acceleration was too fast and the owner of the Bungee operation said yes I could jump it but his wife said NO.
Take care,
