BASE vs skydive wingsuit opening technique
I have always opened my P2 in full flight in BASE (300 jumps) with no problems re:heading performance. Now I am learning to skydive it to practice back flying and barrel rolls. Todays opening caused severe line twists and a chop (canopy opened fine but I spun it up with my body). Any key tips to help improve opening reliability? Eg closing legs/drop knees/flare. Canopy is 7 cell non ellipitical zp 120 loaded 1.5lb per sq foot. Thanks for constructive input.

I open in full flight with an elliptical loaded at 1.6. Just pay more attention to the symmetry of your harness and make sure your brake lines are the same lengths (no twists). Also, make sure you have the longer wingsuit bridle on your pilot chute (9 ft I think it is). That solved all my opening issues when I started flying the bigger suits way back when. Good luck and don't die. Cheers!

A lot of people love to roll the tail of their skydiving canopy way too much.

Think of your packjob...it's all flaked out over your shoulder and you're pulling up the tail to wrap around the whole thing. When you bring the seams together and start rolling - roll them loosely and only 3-4 times. This way when your canopy comes out of the d-bag it will quickly start inflating as opposed to dancing around in a cocoon behind you...and frequently spinning once or twice.

Most people I've talked to with linetwist issues were able to at least improve them this way.

Upsizing will help, small canopies end up in the burble at line stretch. I used to jump a 95, then a 109, then a 120 and now i'm looking at a 135 or a 150..

Youll never make it to skygod upsizing like that, should have went into the 70's sqft.

Swooping was cool in the early 2000s.

The speed of full flight is great for extraction, but it will also compound any asymmetry you have during inflation. Even if you're perfectly stable, it doesn't mean your dbag came out perfect and symmetrical.

I started diving into a big 'ol flare before I pitched. This still seems to give me enough air speed for a good extraction, while allowing me to "saddle out" more vertically as the canopy inflates (rather than way out in front of it). Don't pitch at the apex of the flare, but just before.

Also, be quick to get your hands up and pushing the risers apart. Getting your knees to your chest helps too.

Can you reach the risers without unzipping in a phantom?

Negative. You have to unzip to do anything meaningful with risers in P2. Ive tried.....

upsize if you want to make wingsuiting your priority

new ultralight f-111 skydiving wingsuit specific canopies that fit into smaller containers make wingsuiting a lot easier, and make it possible to still swoop...just change the dbag and risers

if you dont have a big pc and bridle on the ws setup, that would help too

Just create a good, small body position as/after you throw out your PC, so there is minimal burble. Make sure the body position is symmetrical, and no dropped shoulder, knees or de-arch present.

I usually fly (normal up to ballistic speeds) after separation, than initiate a slight flare by raising the head/chest (to slow down). Then grab PC, throw it like a man, then go to a small/collapsed body position. Skydiving I tend to go for a small collapsed body position vs 'keep flying the suit' during base deployments. And never really have issues switching between one or the other technique, depending on the environment I'm in.

Though a base style full flight opening technique also works, the collapsed body position taught during 1st flights is less prone to punish slight asymmetry and other 'cosmetic' mistakes in angle/body position.

Do make sure that during the initial swing, you don't open the legwing, or present any asymmetry (while you're still carrying a lot of forward momentum).

A 120 / 7 cell shouldn't pose to big an issue for wingsuit flying (I fly 2 rigs, one with a 120, one with a 135) and especially with a small suit, you should be more than fine.

Bridle should be a good long one (7 to 9 ft) but longer tends to just cause extra issues with the thing flopping around in your burble (when combined with a girly throw).
Stowless bag definitely helps in having clean/on heading openings.
