Re: [TomAiello] Radio tower antennas
I've actually thought about getting an RF meter in order to do some measurements and empirically evaluate how much radiation is really coming out of these things. I'm just not ready to drop $100+ dollars on it right now, because common consensus is that it's fine.
If you're interested, this website has a pretty good selection of meters that someone else has already done the leg work on, but just know that anything sub-$100 isn't going to give you the information you need.
http://blog.listentoyourgut.com/...ell-phone-radiation/ I think this one is the best for this particular measuring application.
http://www.radmeters.com/Cornet-ED65-re.html Just be aware before you decide to throw hard cash down on this that there will be a fair amount of back end analysis. In this case, I think a uni-directional meter will actually be better, because it will make this analysis easier. I believe you would have to account for the surface area of the measuring device, your body, and the cell transmitter. Ironically, sticking around to put a measuring tape on the transmitter is probably going to expose you to more radiation than you would get from climbing around it, so this kind of becomes an exercise in futility unless your goal is to be our sacrificial test gerbil. Probably more science fair info than you were looking for at any rate.
I believe cell tower workers climb these things while it is transmitting, so it can't be too bad. To emphasize what both Toms are saying, xkcd has a very relevant comic.
