Re: Long Line Towers
These four legged, mostly red & white towers
are all over America, this one appears to have
been converted to a cell tower. The long white
rectangles are uni-directional so the only time
you get radiation, in excess of your own F0N,
is when you are in the front of them.

Re: [rodsnight] Radio tower antennas
I agree with Tom L. That looks like cellular.

Re: [TomAiello] Radio tower antennas
How dangerous would you reckon cell towers are?

There all good for you

Radiation Risk
Here is my own ranking:
Inactive, Cell, FM, TV, AM

Quit putting your F0N in your pocket and
your net radiation exposure will decrease. Tongue

Re: [GreenMachine] Radiation Risk
I thought cell towers wasn't that dangerous but I just wanted to be sure. Also, hell if they can put cell transmitters on my apartment building I'm sure going by them for a few minutes cant kill! Thanks alot. Wink

Re: [rodsnight] Radio tower antennas
I've already had my children, so it's all good for me. Smile

Seriously, though, I don't think it's an issue unless you are going to hang around up there and drink a beer or something.

Re: [TomAiello] Radio tower antennas
I've actually thought about getting an RF meter in order to do some measurements and empirically evaluate how much radiation is really coming out of these things. I'm just not ready to drop $100+ dollars on it right now, because common consensus is that it's fine.

If you're interested, this website has a pretty good selection of meters that someone else has already done the leg work on, but just know that anything sub-$100 isn't going to give you the information you need.

I think this one is the best for this particular measuring application.

Just be aware before you decide to throw hard cash down on this that there will be a fair amount of back end analysis. In this case, I think a uni-directional meter will actually be better, because it will make this analysis easier. I believe you would have to account for the surface area of the measuring device, your body, and the cell transmitter. Ironically, sticking around to put a measuring tape on the transmitter is probably going to expose you to more radiation than you would get from climbing around it, so this kind of becomes an exercise in futility unless your goal is to be our sacrificial test gerbil. Probably more science fair info than you were looking for at any rate.

I believe cell tower workers climb these things while it is transmitting, so it can't be too bad. To emphasize what both Toms are saying, xkcd has a very relevant comic.

Re: [idemallie] Radio tower antennas
Thanks for the information!

If I feel nausea and fevered I will get down ASAP. Haha :)
