IN a Facebook post just three days ago, Toby Benham asked if “wants to come out to do the Hanging Rock rope jump with me?”. It would be one of his last.

The 31-year-old circus performer and daredevil BASE jumper died after the Blue Mountains stunt went horribly wrong yesterday, leaving him dangling 30 metres from a rope after he smashed into a rock face at Blackheath.

The Hanging Rock trick, known as the “Death Swing”, involves jumping off a cliff while attached to a rope and swinging under the rock.

The Sydneysider performed with Eroni’s Circus and his Facebook profile is littered with evidence of his highwire and acrobatic skill, including pictures of him doing handstands in the great outdoors, on the edges of cliffs and even on road signs.

The Daily Telegraph reports Lucky Chance almost died at the same spot in Blackheath four years ago when he got his foot caught in his parachute while attempting his 100th BASE jump.

He was also badly injured in a jump weeks later in France.

He performed in a Spiderman costume and as “Stunt Monkey” for aerial shows at the Victorian-based Eroni’s.

“DO something in life so at the end of the day we have something to SHOW for it. so we can sit back in our astral rocking chair in the sky with a smile on our face, proud in the knowledge that we gave it our best shot!” he wrote in one post.

Eroni’s Circus announced the cancellation of Melbourne shows this week “due to unforeseen circumstances.”

so was he wearing a base rig attempting a rope jump/swing with a base jump or just using the rope?

No rig - just using the rope.
