Re: [StealthyB] Wyoming Wind River Range
Actually it was a month pulling a sled. Nice vacation actually very pretty and scenic. Even though it was a little hard to move around at times, breaking trail through new snow that hadn't really settled into a good pack, I still prefer the winter. The west side is so wet. Little ponds and lakes every where. I can just hear the misquotes buzzing. I'd much rather be their when they're all frozen and dead. And I'd rather be snowed on then rained on.
I went in through Bolder Lake to take a look at the Prong Horn. I got a pretty decent look at it but I didn't quite make the summit to check out the exit point. I was poking around looking for a way up the last bit onto the ridge line but it started to get dark and I had to run back to camp. One spot that I saw looked like it would go. After I got back to the tent the weather turned and a series of three storms chased me all the way back to the trail head. I'm glad I bailed when I did and got down a little lower. Even then I wound up with some pretty deep snow, chest high, to beat my way through. It wasn't that big a deal but the bummer was that those early storms back to back convinced them to give up plowing the road early. My car was snowed in and I had to abandon it and come back for it in the spring. Earliest they had closed the road for seven years, but it just happens when ever the first big storm hits.
Most dangerous part of the trip... riding Gray Hound home to Texas. NEVER EVER RIDE GRAY HOUND IN THE US! NEVER! YOU ARE SAFER HITCH HIKING THEN ON A LONG HAUL BUS IN THE US. IF YOU ARE A YOUNG TEENAGE GIRL YOU ARE SAFER ACCEPTING A RIDE FROM THE GUY IN THE VAN OFFERING YOU CANDY THEN ON A GRAY HOUND BUS.
Not joking. I always warn people about this. I feel sorry for some poor European who doesn't know any better when they show up here and think, "Oh, I'll just take the bus." NOOOO! All I have to say is that if you're going to ride Gray Hound you had better bring your own gun because I garrenty every one else has one. Odds of needing it are pretty good.
I don't know if I would post those videos. Very cool but what is the legal issues their? It's actually split under three different jurisdictions but it's all designated wilderness area and aerial delivery with out a permit is forbidden just like in a national park.
In any case. I have not actually stood on the exit point, but assuming their is a launch point, and it looked promising, I would say that the Prong Horn is definitely doable.
