Wyoming Wind River Range
I am looking for any info about base exits in the wind river area.
I know some jumps have been done.
Overhanging tower, wolfshead, etc.

I will be headed there to put in a new route or three and will be searching a few spots to find exits.

ANY INFO AT ALL WOULD REALLY HELP.

Thankx all!

Re: [epicry] Wyoming Wind River Range
You beat me to this question! I'm in Rock Springs, just 90 miles south of the Winds. If you know of some let me know and if you want company finding more there's two of us here in this town.

Mount Hooker and the surrounding area would be my choice in that range. Are you planning on hiking in or using pack animals? I haven't jumped there but have been eyeing some spots for a year or more.

Myself and the wife are going,
Expedition style with a larger group would be with pack animals.
I can carry 115 lb all day the wife carries 75 lb.
we will have a bolt kit and climbing gear.

We are used to mountaineering. We would like to find a route that leads to a good exit point.
I have time to check multiple formations.

There are a number of spots that have been jumped, East Temple Peak was first jumped by Alf Humphries in 1990. I scouted Hooker for a couple of years but didn't jump it because of a lack of safe landing area and logistics at the time. It eventually did get jumped, but the hike up is probably only open late season, late August,Sept,.. bring bug spray.
The Wind River Range is a gigantic wilderness area and one of the most desolate spots in the lower 48, it has Wyoming's highest peak, Gannett peak, in the Northern half. The Maps divide it into North and South, and you could spend a lifetime exploring it and never know it intimately. Easiest access is from the West.
Check out Joe Kellsey's book " Wind River Climbs " and "Wind River trails " an obscure book by Finis Mitchell, who planted fish in the lakes in the 30's and 40's. If you are a fisherman it is absolutely amazing, and I have lived off trout when I have been back in there.
I've carried a BASE rig in there on three different trips and never made a jump, but had some of the greatest backcountry experiences of my life.
Have a great time, Regards, B.

Thanks for sharing the video, I was last back at Hooker in 2007 and my climber/girlfriend at the time wasn't too thrilled about my mission. I see you found the best exit point. Even though Hooker is claimed to be the most vertical face in Wyoming at @ 2000', Joe Kelsey, who wrote the book on Wind River climbs told me it was more in the vicinity of 1700'
I have approached Hooker from the East and the West and it is an epic undertaking either way.
The "Winds " are no casual undertaking, and if BASE is your mission it should be your main focus, and not just a side endeavor.
RiggerLee once went back there on a solo winter excursion (2 weeks ), which is a testament to just how Bad ass and Hardcore he is, but as I remember he didn't make a jump, and then had issues with lost car keys or something? when he came out :-)
Congratulations for getting Hooker, it was a goal of mine never achieved.
A fascinating place not to be underestimated, Congratulations on what to the best of my knowledge would have been the first jumps from Hooker?
I really enjoyed and appreciated the video.

Actually it was a month pulling a sled. Nice vacation actually very pretty and scenic. Even though it was a little hard to move around at times, breaking trail through new snow that hadn't really settled into a good pack, I still prefer the winter. The west side is so wet. Little ponds and lakes every where. I can just hear the misquotes buzzing. I'd much rather be their when they're all frozen and dead. And I'd rather be snowed on then rained on.

I went in through Bolder Lake to take a look at the Prong Horn. I got a pretty decent look at it but I didn't quite make the summit to check out the exit point. I was poking around looking for a way up the last bit onto the ridge line but it started to get dark and I had to run back to camp. One spot that I saw looked like it would go. After I got back to the tent the weather turned and a series of three storms chased me all the way back to the trail head. I'm glad I bailed when I did and got down a little lower. Even then I wound up with some pretty deep snow, chest high, to beat my way through. It wasn't that big a deal but the bummer was that those early storms back to back convinced them to give up plowing the road early. My car was snowed in and I had to abandon it and come back for it in the spring. Earliest they had closed the road for seven years, but it just happens when ever the first big storm hits.

Most dangerous part of the trip... riding Gray Hound home to Texas. NEVER EVER RIDE GRAY HOUND IN THE US! NEVER! YOU ARE SAFER HITCH HIKING THEN ON A LONG HAUL BUS IN THE US. IF YOU ARE A YOUNG TEENAGE GIRL YOU ARE SAFER ACCEPTING A RIDE FROM THE GUY IN THE VAN OFFERING YOU CANDY THEN ON A GRAY HOUND BUS.

Not joking. I always warn people about this. I feel sorry for some poor European who doesn't know any better when they show up here and think, "Oh, I'll just take the bus." NOOOO! All I have to say is that if you're going to ride Gray Hound you had better bring your own gun because I garrenty every one else has one. Odds of needing it are pretty good.

I don't know if I would post those videos. Very cool but what is the legal issues their? It's actually split under three different jurisdictions but it's all designated wilderness area and aerial delivery with out a permit is forbidden just like in a national park.

In any case. I have not actually stood on the exit point, but assuming their is a launch point, and it looked promising, I would say that the Prong Horn is definitely doable.

Hey Lee! thanks for correcting me on the post, especially about your car getting snowed in, I think it was Steve Goryl my old friend who was a NOLS instructor for 30yrs who told me that story. He also gave me tons of beta about the Winds and let me base out of his place in Lander.
I also always thought Pronghorn would go, but as I said before, a person could spend a lifetime exploring the Winds.
I took the Greyhound from Green River, Ut. to Denver once, it was definitely more dangerous than BASEjumping, it was 3hrs late from Vegas because the Cops had held it for a fugitive search, it got to GR and a guy passed out and had to be taken away by the paramedics, there were syringes rolling around under the seats, and another paramedic call in Glenwood Springs for an OD, Scary shit! Bus travel in Europe is so civilized that it's good to warn Europeans about how dangerous and disgusting Greyhound is.
