S/L A - Ideal Wind Conditions
I found an deal low A (~180ft). It's a freestander with a massive gravel lot on one side and dense forest on the other. There always seems to be a headwind of variable speed (consistent for a week now). I plan to S/L it. Can this be accomplished "safely" with a headwind? (<5mph)

If there is any doubt, there is no doubt.

Why not jump it to the side (image attached)? A google maps shot would help, but if you static line it to the side, chances are an off heading would result in you facing towards the gravel lot, both from wind effects during freefall and a windsock effect. It also reduces the risk of object strike, while increasing the risk of a tree landing. I understand this is a trade off, but in the words of DW...

In the event that you're on heading, you just land. You could do it at a 45 degree angle to get a little bit of both worlds, but ultimately, yeah you'd probably be fine if you just jumped in zero-ish wind.

You are really the only one that should answer that. If everyone on here said yes, and you end up hanging from the antenna or in the trees because everyone said yes, then that's your own fault.

Based on your knowledge of your canopy and its reactions to wind and wing loading, how far you can fly it, how much altitude will you lose on opening, deep or shallow brakes, all of these variables should provide you with your answer.

"Should of got the fucking brakes off, I got the fucking risers, it did fucking nothing."

Yeah, whatever happens, it's my own doing. I'll own it. I climbed it halfway the other night. The winds were light and I was sure it would be OK, but I managed to talk myself out of it anyway.

dont fuck around with winds man. SL it with zero winds.
my buddy fucked himself up real good of a 180' A static line.

One week = always?

The last 5 days in the Valley have been cloudy and raining, so I guess it's always cloudy and raining here. But the two weeks before that were hot and sunny without a cloud in the sky, so I guess it's always hot and sunny here.

Not worth a head wind. Ive done it on a small power tower I jump often and got very comfortable with. Thought I was going to sink right onto it on opening with a probably 5mph or less head wind. Pack in shallow breaks, something I always do on a static line. I agree that a 90 degree cross is a good option so you can turn directly into the wind. A direct head wind is not worth it, speaking absolutely from experience. The winds will eventually be right.

That's the scenario I fear, there is a barbed wire fence that makes a ~20ft perimeter around the base I don't want to land on either. I'm leaving this town tomorrow and the winds are going to suck again tonight. Likely will have to let this one go :/
