google earth
So im hoping that google earth isnt very accurate with an either vertical or overhung cliff. I checked out exit 6 on google earth at kjerag, and it looked more like a slopy, severely underhung mountain than an actual vert/overhung cliff.

So from anyones experience, is google earth not very accurate when showing cliff faces that could potentially be very overhung? drove all day today and got completely rained/clouded out from the potential object, couldnt see shit with the low clouds, so i dont know if this thing is vert or as overhung as were told it is......google earth makes it look totally unjumpable.

Don't trust google earth for gauging sheerness. The best you can do is look for streaks in the image overlaying the relief. Past that it's pretty worthless. I've opened a good handful of objects that look like a glorified hill on Google earth, especially if you are jumping an overhung section of an otherwise positive face. The shitty truth is rocks inclometers and lasers are the truth speakers. I have had better luck with usgs topo overlays on Google earth though it only provides higher level vision of the cliff. Just look for lines that directly stack each other, but again not fool proof, and somtimes still unnecessarily discouraging.

Just my 2 cents

Re: [alantrinidad] google earth
right on man thats what i figured. it was just such a goddamned cocktease to drive all day in hopes of finding a crown jewel, only to not be able to see the object because of low clouds. it was RIGHT there, but we couldnt see it.
tomorrow hopefully the weather is clear!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
cheers

Re: [TransientCW] google earth
topo maps are what you want to look at. The closer the lines are together on a tall peak the more chance its vertical. check out this site: http://www.mytopo.com/maps/

there is also a site that will give you the choice of 8 differnt types of maps you can compare but i cant find it right now. someone may be able to help.

http://maps.google.com also has topo/terrain. I don't know if it's more or less accurate than mytopo but I think the coverage is a little better.

Re: [BodeyM] google earth
look up the UsGS plugin for google earth.
it will overlay a good topo map on any part of the US, but you have to select each section and it will download it.
ive had good experiences with it anyway, and have opened many US wsbase jumps that you could say were partially inspired by the findings.
also, just look at pictures people add to the google earth servers if you want to see certain views...

On the topic of google earth, FCC has a download that automatically loads antenna locations and heights and info when you zoom in on any area... (link removed to prevent dumb wuffos)
