Re: [dirteedave] Access fund model
Yes, an ideal situation is BASE jumping allowed in parks as a similar structure to rock climbing.
There are organizations out there and people are talking with the NPS. One of the biggest problems is we, as a community, have some serious challenges with ourselves if we ever want to see legal BASE jumping. Some people don't and rightfully so in their case. It's a whole lot easier to go about it sneakily than it is to put in the hard work and try to change the system that is, to a degree, flawed. To be perfectly honest it will be quite a while to where the public accepts this sport. Most of that is the human mind incapable of understanding something outside their realm of relevance. The other part, we initiate ourselves. We choose the dramatic music to our terrain flying videos, we give the media their content (granted they edit it to be more extreme than it is), and we seek the noteriety for what we do. Until we can find the balance of this, as rock climbing has, we will always sit in the corner as the misunderstood and easily marginalized. That's not always a bad thing though. There's advantages and disadvantages to both.
So to answer your question it's not about an organization coming in and saving us, it's about us doing it for ourselves. Educating ourselves and others on our sport without hiding the harsh reality of the fact that this is probably the most lethal sport currently in existence, but also showing our methodical approach and curious nature that makes this sport what it is. The beauty and the love from people who barely know each other. The magical sites you will see putting yourself on the edge. People think we are altered on adrenaline, but in fact we are experiencing life in it's purest form.
