Seven as a first canopy
Hey guys,

Theres a second hand Seven canopy in a Helium container currently up for grabs. Does anyone have much experience with this canopy?? Im enrolled to do my FJC soon and would be my first rig.

How does it perform on the low stuff? Could i use it in Aus in due course or is it not so suitable? All i can find is the websites sales pitch so keen to hear some unbiased reviews. :)

Re: [climbing.simon] Seven as a first canopy
For the stuff in AUS (low cliffs and tiny "landing areas") I think I would suggest something more like the OSP or the Outlaw. The Seven tends to be coupled with the Dagger in my mind, in that it is nonvented, fast forward speed, "swoopier" feel. I haven't heard that it has great DB approaches, which you might need in AUS. I'd try to find a different canopy before this one. Personally, I would rather get an old Mojo (with the same number of jumps on the canopy) before a Seven for that environment.
However, assume my opinion is only that... remember that opinions are like... you know.

I just got done flying a seven around Europe and I wouldnt want to jump it anywhere in the US, unless it was for very specific items. Wouldnt even think about bringing it home in Washington. Get yourself an OSP or blackjack and call it good. Its the skydive canopy of Base Jumping.

Fill out your profile so people know who you are.Maybe the locals can lend you some advice.

It has a very fast forward speed. It can get a little tricky on deep braked approaches, but it does pick up speed quick for the flare, you just need the room for it to recover.

Just bring your velo instead. Or get an Ibex and drag a toe.

I have 500+ jumps on my seven and love how it flies and would not hesitate to land anywhere with it. But , I don't think the seven is for everybody. I also know a bunch of people who don't like it for the speed reasons . Those said also don't have much time flying the canopy either. If your new and in oz my opinion is this canopy is not for you. I use mine these days for slider up only jumps. Seeing how theres not much slider up in oz and this canopy has no vents with low experience could lead to some interesting landings. Again though, I love how the seven flies and feel most other canopies are docile in comparison without big riser inputs.

Ive got over 1000 jumps on this airfoil. Ive jumped it fairly extensively in AUS and it worked great for me. Canopy is more aggressive than something like an OSP or BJ for sure. If youre planning on staying in AUS for a lot of your jumps, just make sure you know a good rigger to do patches, regardless of what canopy you buy.

Ive owned blackjacks and I dont think you could go wrong there either. Only a handful of jumps on OSPs, but I just didnt like the glide on them much. Have a new Outlaw but not enough jumps for a good review. Seems to open very nice and super easy to sink in deep.

I think people look for a specific canopy to save them. Learn to fly your parachute and youll be fine. I use a canopy with vents when I freefall sub 250 or static line sub 150. My two slider down rigs are currently both vented sevens, and I would jump them anywhere in the world on any jump.

Like I said earlier, I will freefall down to 250 and static line down to 150 without vents. I found myself frequently wanting to do both, so I had vents put in my seven that had almost 500 jumps on it. another 150 jumps later its still my favorite canopy, and I actually just got a brand new 240 vented. I have the luxury of having lightweight rigs for slider up, and it makes more sense to have vents in my slider down rigs. Ive been in martys ear to get factory venting for a while now.

He'll do venting in his spare time. :)

I'm probably going to vent my Feather and see how well it lasts. Seems other light weight canopies are handling it so why not.

But with a ZP nose, right?

I do not have a ZP nose on my Seven, and have pounded in pretty good on a 170' SL. Granted, my canopy is huge and I am generally uncoordinated.

No my original one is a no zp model. And yes, low jumps the size of canopy as well as age can start to make a pretty big difference. I've also never flown my canopy directly into power lines for no apparent reason, so I know our canopy piloting philosophies and a little differentWink. And before you ask, the answer is no, you will never live that down Sly

Damn it, Charley.

PS- Through my experiment, we learned that James can carry 3x his body weight.

I jumped a Se7en with a ZP nose and vents for about 18 months, and I was very happy with it. The vents helped the sink ability quite a bit, and the pressurization was vastly improved over the unvented version.

How many jumps approximately? I haven't jumped a Vented one yet.

When I was jumped a standard Seven with and without ZP, the sink was rather good. Then again, I'm used to flying parachutes. Skydiving a shit ton makes flying BASE canopies a lot easier.

I have a Feather with ZP now that I just picked up before making a trip to Norway. My only complaint is that I should have bought 1 size down. I'm going to have the Feather Vented at some point after Nick returns.
