Houston had a really big BASE jumping scene in the early days of BASE and many jumpers got their BASE numbers in downtown Houston from the 1003 foot tall Texas Commerce Building. The first four BASE numbers were earned by Phil Smith, Phil Mayfield, Jean Boenish, and Carl Boenish at this building. Rick Harrison, our keeper of the BASE numbers, also got his first building (and first BASE jump) there! Many of these folks also jumped the 30 to 40 objects in the area including legal paid jumps at the Astrodome (at the time considered the 8th wonder of the world) in front of tens of thousands of people. As the fourth largest city in the U.S., I’m hoping this film can come so that Phil Smith, Rick Harrison, myself, and all the old time and newer BASE jumpers can attend it in the city they live in!
Enclosed is the photo of Phil Smith earning BASE 1, taken by Phil Mayfield in freefall, earning him BASE 2, at the Texas Commerce Building in 1981.
Also enclosed is Kevin Venell (BASE 58) jumping the Transco Tower with Phil Smith following him.
