Closing Loop Construction
Has anyone attempted to make closing loops out of a material with a low breaking strength? 80 Lbs break cord would certainly require extra care, and some people might not like the additional maintenance. But perhaps something that would break ~150Lbs would work? In the event of a pin lock, I am thinking it would clear the problem. Even with the very small chance that this could happen, I would still feel better doing a significant amount of maintenance than letting chance dictate. The only problem I see would be using a material so weak that the closing process would break it.

I tied a piece of Type III nylon (relevant to the most recent case) to a 150 Lbs weight (I was the weight) and it didn't break. When I bounced around a little, still nothing. Then I bounced around a lot and it broke. I'm guessing the breaking strength is somewhere between 200-300 pounds.

The thought of premature container opening scares me moreUnsure

Moving around with your rig on might also put some pressure on your pins/closing loop, furthering the risk of premature cord break??

I think I'd rather just use a velcro rig. Plus velcro rigs are old school cool, especially with a psychedelic tie dye pattern.

Do you think you would feel more comfortable taking a velcro rig to terminal than one with breakaway closing loops? What about for wingsuits?

Now that I am thinking through it more, I can see how it would be way less dangerous to take a very very small chance of getting a pin lock than to start testing new designs. Still, I like to think through these things as I like the technical side of BASE.

I've never taken a velcro rig terminal but I've heard of people doing it. I think that's the point of having the top of the shrivel flap tuck into the top flap (like the Apex V). You'd probably want to replace your velcro pretty often if you take it terminal.

However, I do think the risk of pin lock is lower with Spectra closing loops vs. Type IIA, especially with really short loops. Just less friction.

I think that any loops a PC is capable of breaking would leave you open to premature breakages.
