Re: [base570] Canadian jumpers busted
Just a bit insight into this one because I know the individuals.
Approx. 1100pm, the 3 individuals entered the premises of the crane. The site itself is a construction zone with just a construction fence on the perimeter. (Granted common sense tells people they shouldnt go in there) There were no " Do Not Enter" or " No Trespassing" signs on the premises. With regards to access to the object itself, after the fence ( 7ft tall, loosely erected, no barbed wire) from the base of the crane to the top is a straight climb with absolutely no locks/barriers to negotiate, therefore there is nothing to be damaged or vandalized to gain access to the exit. ( had there have been, knowing these guys they wouldnt have picked this site) The object itself is a 405ft crane at the edge of a road that leads into a huge valley, where the primary LZ is located. For this, you need a N-W wind for the jump. When the wind is right, this puts the boom directly over the edge of the treed slope into the valley ( so your'e not directly over the road/sidewalk should shit go south) This still gives you a good 20-30s canopy ride depending on the delay you take. From the LZ its a short walk to the P-Lot which is a good 2-3 minute drive away from the actual object and from the LZ to the vehicles is a well hidden trail from the main road.
The reason there was such a big response that night is because someone after the first jumper exited, called the police and said there was a group of 2-3 people committing suicide. ( must have only payed attention for the first 2 seconds of every jumper and not have heard the loud crack and giant piece of nylon) At this point, Air-1 had already been flying near the vicinity, it was over head of the LZ by the time they had stashed and began their walk-out.
yaddayadda yadda, cops get called in to the location and they were takin into custody.
The kicker is theyre trying to charge them with B&E and Mischief when all other incidents in the city in the past had just been a trespassing fine. So as a result their gear was confiscated. According to the criminal code, Mischief has to be proven with malicious intent to interfere/damage the object in question or the people operating it, so there will be some legal proceedings to follow.
Side note i've cranked that Object 4 times and it's one of the nicest objects around these parts.
