Swiss valley Trains and Cable Cars
Trying to work out the most cost effective way to handle transportation on my trip and wanted to see if anyone had some insight. On previous trips to the valley I have rented a car, but want to try the train this time around.

General Plan is taking the train from Zurich Airport to LB and back to the airport again 9 days later. Trying to do around 4 jumps per day utilizing the cable car / train combo from LB to Winteregg.

From what I can see best bet would be to buy the half fare card and use it for the entire trip (trains and cable car) -- is there anything I am missing or any pass that would be more cost effective to buy?

Thanks

9 x 4 = 36 jumps. Given that you´re saying you need to take the train to Winteregg you´re planning to jump only from the Nose. A single ticket to Winteregg is 10.40chf so with 1/2 fare you will get it for 5.20. 5.20 x 36 = 187,2chf. If you buy 6 ride punch cards you will get them a bit cheaper of course, don´t remember the exact price but let´s assume 150chf. You can also get a monthly pass to Nose side only for 80chf or something so I would say this is better deal for you.

What you also might want to consider is that if this is your only trip to LB, you might skip the 1/2fare card and buy the monthly pass in LB (there is no reduction from the monthly pass with the 1/2fare card). ZRH-LB standard price is 80.40 so retunr ticket (wtihout 1/2fare) is 160.80. Add the ~80chf for your monthly pass to the Nose, your total cost of transportation is around 240chf for the trip. Compared to the cost of buying the 1/2fare card 175chf / year + 80.40 (1/2fare ZRH-LB-ZRH) + transportation in LB.

So it all boils down to the fact that buying the 1/2fare for year only makes sense if you do multiple trips to LB. If you just do one a year, doesn´t make sense.

What Marcus said. No half fare card unless you're coming back within a year and one month pass for cable cars etc in Lauterbrunnen.

As well as cost the pass is way more convenient if you're ever rushing for a gondola or suddenly decide to go to a different exit.

also check the sbb website (sbb.ch) for "super saver ticket". if you buy in advance (I think it works 14 days prior the trip) for a particular train you can get as much as 50% discount. you need to print your ticket. for the cable you can buy a month pass for both sides of the valley now only, but the price went lower (I think it was around 65 franks in the end of the last year). enjoy, k.

Awesome guys, this is exactly what I was looking for. One more question - Is there a web page where I can see the different prices for 6 punch cards, monthly pass for the nose side and monthly pass for the whole valley? I've searched around the SBB and the Jungfrau websites a bit, but haven't found it. Probably right in front of my face somewhere.

Thanks!

Not sure if those are on the website but if my memory serves me right last year the monthly passes were around 70-80chf for nose side and maybe 90chf for the whole valley.

i had to specify what side of the valley i wanted when i purchased my monthly pass. i was under the impression it was good for both sides, but on the way to yellow Ocean we got stopped by the train guards. they were super nice and could have gave us a big fine. specify you want both sides when you purchase the tix

I buy mine at the train station. Also bring a 2x2 photo, otherwise you'll have to pay something like 10sf for one at the photo booth.Unsure

Do you know if it has to be the standard passport kind? Or can I just print out a photo and cut it to 2x2?

Doubt it has to be passport quality and I'm not sure the exact size since it's Europe. All they do with it is laminate it in a little booklet so you can show it to the person checking at the bus or cable car stations so they can verify it's you and not someone using your pass.

The photo booth sometimes takes your money, without giving the photosTongue
But you can bullshit the the ticket ladies into taking your picture with their polaroid. They'll do it for 5 franksSly

I always get the 1/2 pass , but only for the month , the savings will add up if you decide to check out the Eiger or Grindelwald
Also, for the photo , I just make a color copy of my passport pic
