Alright boys and girls. I have a question. Sure my friends call me a pussy because there are certain things i wont climb without protection, but that comes from a serious rock climbing accident as a young teenager that really fucked up my world.

I am interested in makin a knotted rope/grappling hook setup to toss about 40' up on a metal leg. I need to minimize the amount of metal on metal noise i make.

I was wondering if anyone could reccomend any type of spray-on rubber, silicone, etc product that could stick well to various metals, and potentially soften the sound of a hook impacting a steel tower.

This may not even make a bit of difference, trying to use some type of softening agent, but does anyone have any ideas?

The leg is 45' to the ladder, and all we have are 1" boltheads to put our weight on. Fuck that. Im also consider gear suitable for power lineman who climb power poles.

cut some surgical tubing and pull it over the metal rods of the grappling hook?

or just spray some testosterone on your nuts and climb the boltheads like a real man :)

why not skip the hook setup and just use a longer rope that you throw over the thingy that you would use your hook on?

get a rope that is at least 3 times as long as your needed height. throw rope over anchor and knot a loop on one side. feed the other end through that loop and pull the loop up to the anchor.
you can now climb / hymar on this side of the rope.
to remove the rope from bottom just pull on the other end of the rope again and you pull the loop down and can pull off the rope.

a prefessional treeclimber showed me that once. with trees you just go around the tree with one end before you put it through the loop and when you pull the rope loop up you kind-or-larks-head it around the stem of the tree. so you only need a weak branch to get the rope to your desired height, but it will bear your load since it pulls tight around the stem.

edit to add: never mix up which side of the rope is the climbing up side and the pulling off side. climbing on the wrong end is a pretty bad thing to try... if loop is pulled real tight you maybe make it off the ground a few feet before it suddenly drops you...

Can you throw a rope with or without a hook 70'? You could just move back to cali where we are blessed with ladders and stairs.

Seriously, just get an ascender. You can find a cheap used one for under $30 and it makes life a lot easier.

Coat the grappling hook with a some rubber type material.

Or use a hand-held cross-bow, tie a fishing line to it, attach the end of the fishing line to a rope, pull it over and through, tie off, and prussec ascend the rope.

Felix Baumgartner used a crossbow to shoot a line over the arm of the Christ the Redeemer statue, pulled a rope over it, and then ascended via prussec.

Pipe insulation foam sleeves. Cheap at hardware stores. Kind of like the foam sleeves on your BMW bike bars when you were a kid.
