Anyone Broken Their Pelvis and still been able to jump?
Hey guys, Quick question for you... In October I shattered my pelvis in a motorcycle accident and in the midst of recovering .. Just looking to see if anyone has had a similar injury whether BASE jumping or not and still been able to jump after recovery?.. Doctors opinions only go so far and would like to hear from someone who has gone through the same thing I have and still continued jumping

Thanks

P.s heres the X-ray to compare

Never my pelvis, but i broke my femur up in the hip area, considered a hip break, 2 years before i started jumping and never had an issue. Still have the 2 rods and screw in there. Also have a plate and screws on my collarbone and never had a problem with openings. Im sure you'll be fine. Just let it heal.

This is my pelvis. The docs said if Id had the surgery in the States Id had the big screws like yours, but they do things a little different in Switzerland. It took me 9 months to get back to skydiving and I waited a year to do my first base jump back in TF.

Looks very similar to my injury, Was recovery tough?. Has anything physically changed from before your accident as far as what you could do etc? Thanks for the replies BTW any other insight is welcomed as well

The recovery was very tough. For me the worst part was the first few weeks in the hospital, so you may be through the worst of it. I can do everything I could do prior to the injury. The only insight I can offer is don't over do it during your recovery. I have a tendency to over do it, and every time I did it set me back a few days in terms of strength, mobility and pain level.

I Broke my pelvis during a cliff strike nearly two years ago. I have screws and a plate much like your's, My recovery consisted of 3 months in a wheel chair and 3 months of physical therapy and I was back jumping.

Long delays would hurt when I first started back but now (375 jumps +) after my first jump back it doesn't ever bother me.

If you want to jump again you most certainly will :)

Good luck

Was cut off on my motorcycle by a transport truck on the Highway, was ran over by the back wheels .. Worst part was sitting in the hospital for 4 days before surgery .. Your balls swell up to the size of two softballs, catheter was.. interesting.. Doing better now .. Still in pain, just started walking the other day .. Going to be awhile .. Happened on October 22nd so almost 2 months... As far as preventing it lol If you want to be invisible.. ride a motorcycle..

I broke my pelvis after opening with a spinning tension knot and tumbling down the Eiger. I have no chronic pain from it and have no limitations to my activities. It's all luck of the draw, but don't give up hope. Do physical therapy like it's your job, because it is. Your break looks like it was pretty bad, but anything is possible.

Yes you can be re-injured. I don't know the extent of your other soft tissue injuries beyond just a pelvic fracture (although I can take a guess based on your X-rays) so take it with a grain of salt, but in general any time you have hardware in your bones it increases the risk of fractures around the hardware. Kinda like when you're drilling a screw into wood sometimes the wood splits along the grain as it's going in. Assuming you are an otherwise healthy relatively young guy, the odds are very low that would happen with just the impact of say a hard slider down opening, but if you have a wall strike or something similar, it would not be surprising to have fractures at the ends of screws/plates/hardware of any kind. So just try not to do that Wink

Good luck!

Didn't break it. Split at the ligament in the middle. No pain injury. The fix was fun. Walking on crutches in 5 days. Walking without within 2 weeks. Jumping in 3.5 was. No ramifications.

That's amazing. I've seen a lot of x-rays but I've never seen 3-inch long femurs before!
