Distractions
i just find it humorous that there has been such deliberation about music as a dangerous detractor whilst BASE jumping.

i would just like to point out that probably much less than 30% of all my jumps have been done completely sober. but i'm sure that makes me more dialed in and focused.

just like i'm a better driver and pilot when i'm drinking. i'm sure that's true. Smile

carry on.

It's much scarier to jump sober :)

Then just imagine that on the 70%+ jumps you encounter a person like Roberta gearing up (see pic) with you at the exit , offering you a free beer and a new GoPro if you manage to upload your playlist to her smartphone ....

I guess, then a little distraction might occur related to music issues ...

By the way, there is an explanation for your theory to be a better driver/pilot:

My point isn't so much that it's necessarily a dangerous distraction, in and of itself, but it is a distraction nonetheless.

Add enough small distractions (music, camera, pretty girls, hangover, long hike, etc.) and you start to really muddy the waters.

I think in BASE jumping we control a very small amount of the infinite variables upon which we hang our safety. Isn't it prudent to manage the ones we actually do have control over?

As I've stated before, I'm not here to change anyone's mind or tell them how to jump. Do your thing. These are just my personal thoughts and small rules that I've placed upon myself to try and stay alive. It's worth mentioning, however, that even with these rules (which I think are so damn smart) I'm still very much at risk on any given jump.

Re: [blitzkrieg] Distractions
i'm seriously not debating any of it, distractions are distractions. i think we can agree on that.

just having some fun, and thought it was funny that there was a huge amount of posting, inside one man's incident post, tearing apart one tiny, possible contributor... when the reality is that there are so many other things going on.

but for cereal, just having fun. it's what i do. Tongue

So dancing while watching music videos on exit should be avoided?

I know the post wasn't serious, just taking the opportunity to clarify my point.

It's a bit ridiculous that the incident thread took a tangent over such a small detail, but I do think it was something worth discussing.

All that said, I jump at Mustache Boogie every year, so we're all guilty of jumping below our peak levels from time to time. Tongue

hehe...

i don't think i've ever seen myself at a peak level, well, performance-wise that is. Tongue

i'm really good at not being really good at anything.

im not super fond of the absolute blackout drunk BASE jumping, ive done a handful of those and its just asking for something bad to happen.

i am definitely a fan of having a few before jumping. some of the objects in the northwest are terrifying, and to be honest, its amazing what a tallboy or two will do to calm my heart and allow me to get dialed in and focused.

i say ok!

Not that I have anything against drinking while jumping... It has its momentsSmile But medical studies clearly show that your reaction goes down to about 55% of your normal after just 1 beer, 30 minutes after consuming. They actually had guys drink, and a control group, and that drag race test thingy with the light and the pedal.

My point is, if the jump has more than very unlikely chances of shit going down, substances multiply that chance greatly.

So, from my opinion, consuming on base is totally acceptable from very well jumped and forgiving objects, with a good crew at your side. But the line is, don't get wasted to a point where you would not do a skydive.

p.s. I am writing this moderately intoxicated, so no harm doneCrazyLaugh

Multitasking is a common myth.
In fact, in the neuroscience there is a different view of real multitasking ability.
The brain just manages to coordinate one or two complex tasks. Smart brains may switch between tasks faster than others, still there is one thing to do after the other.
Some Stanford Scientists made a study that trying to fulfill multitasking jobs, your performance-level decreases.

Test yourself:
ever tried to listen to a detailed phonecall and writing everything down while you hear it > easy going?
Or driving your car through a crowded street, looking for a free parking lot and making a phone call at the same time ..

Each task is no rocket science for itself, but combined a little challenging...
By the way, are you (like me) turning down the volume while driving backwards? .. Wink

And yes, you know, we germans can expand an issue, no matter what the core is.. Tongue

But I´m with you Tracy, we are all different and should clean up our own mess.. Angelic

No doubt this describes me as well.

On the "sobriety" thing:

I sobered up (once) and gave this base thing some thought, and didn't really care for what I found. It's waayyy scary. After returning to the blissfulness of "impaired", I found myself liking this shit all over again.Tongue
