Re: [yil7] What Clamps do you prefer for packing?
If you want to downsize your clamps, try using rubber bands instead of clamps to hold the line groups. Just rubber band the packing tabs together with tailgate bands.
I generally use tools to pack parachutes for the same reason I use tools for other jobs. They make the job faster, more precise, easier, or more efficient.
In contrast to Newman's experience, I first learned to pack with no tools, and adding tools in made it much easier.
In my experience, beginners are best to start with many tools to over-control the pack job, and then remove tools as they become more comfortable packing. Using the tools to do some of the labor makes it easier to focus on the actual pack job, rather than on the wrestling techniques.
I have encountered many jumpers who seem to think that packing with fewer tools is somehow proof of their manhood--as if an enormous penis and testicles are the only tools a real man needs to pack. I honestly find it quite ridiculous when people act that way (and I know that not everyone who packs without tools does that).
Ian, you can "revive" the old tired clamp by taking the plastic head off and filling it with shoe goo, and then replacing it. The shoe goo not only attaches the plastic head firmly, but also adds an extra layer of padding.
