Antenna Climbing
Hi there,
I am not a BASE jumper (although I am a skydiver and very fascinated by it), but I do believe I have a request for information which is appropriate for the community. I have recently gotten into climbing cranes, and have been looking at a few antennas in my area. Due to the sensitive nature of site-naming I will not post any links to the structures which I am referring to, but I would happily PM anyone with more info if they would be willing to give me any tips.
These are high antennas (tallest 300m/1000ft) I am talking about - definitely not AM (I already climbed one of them actually but don't know just how bad of an idea that was). Following the climb, I have done some research on an Blinc forums, an urban explorer forum, and subsequently using the following link: http://www.fcc.gov/encyclopedia/tv-query-broadcast-station-search (sorry, I don't now to make it clicky). I would really appreciate any tips or warnings given and/or ways to find information on structures for which I only have the coordinate information.
As an example of my experience, the antenna I climbed has both FM and TV broadcasting from it, but I did not feel any sort of "heating" effect from RF radiation nor GI discomfort on the following days. Also, we climbed internally, but I don't feel comfortable doing the climb again without some more info. Again, any tips you guys may have would be greatly appreciated. I will try to give as much as I can in terms of descriptions etc.
Cheers!

Don't stop at emitters, don't get caught, leave no trace behind.

Re: [potentialBASEr] Antenna Climbing
They've been on high alert ever since the first Ebola infection this side of the Atlantic. All public records are now classified, and they're installing all sorts of motion sensors, IR cameras, and have been unloading truckloads of razor wire on site to keep the disease from infecting the antennas and spreading over the airwaves. Anything even close to 1000 feet tall usually had an armed guard around the clock, and most of the time a K-9 unit is on call.

Honestly, I'm impressed that you even managed to climb one of them. It must have been sometime before the security clampdown because for the past month or so BASE jumpers have been completely shut out of broadcast towers continent-wide. It's just not worth it anymore. In fact the central committee is considering nixing the 'A' all together and changing the name to SEB jumping, or something along those lines.

Really wish we could help, but unfortunately you came to us during a really difficult time :(

You should delete this post. They are on to you, man. Fucking careless! Nice knowing you. Enjoy prison...if you make it.

To the OP, better PM me the locations of these objects. I know a guy that can check the list. Good luck.

I know shveddy personally; he puts apples in my canopy for me. He's safe at the moment, in Pakistan. They won't get him there.

I'm assuming they are in Canada?

Antenna climbing?
Don't do it!
I fell for the old "Everyone's doin' it!" line years ago, and honestly thought that all was good. Did it for years with no ill-effects, and no noticeable issues.
To be straight, I'm still "Ok".
For now...
Alas, I feel it's only a matter of time before the symptoms start. Unsure

A fellow jumper from the Carolinas hasn't been so fortunate.
The "anomaly" known well in my AO as base515, is the one with the "problem".
The man's nuts look like a pair of over-ripe kiwi fruit.
Now I know it may seem weird that I know how his nuts look, but when it all started he was obviously concerned, and all of us locals had to give him our personal diagnosis.
That, and the fact that it's difficult to get the man to keep his pants on (fucker'll get naked in a minute).
Now, other than his nuts, he seems fairly "normal', as far as base jumpers go, and according to him he feels no different.
*Although he is a little self-conscious when getting naked around fellow jumpers*
The one positive aspect is that to this day, try as he might, he has been unable to reproduce. Thank God for small miracles.
Anyway...
Take my advice and stay away from antennas.
Theres really nothing good that can come from them, unless you long for the equivalent of a vasectomy without the "cool scar"...
I live in constant fear.
It's like having death (actually worse) following you around on a daily basis, continually reminding you that at any given moment your "boys" could swell and change color like so many tropical fruits...
Trust me. It's a living Hell.

p.s.
If you doubt my story, ask base570. He's seen those nuts. He knows the truth. Wink

p.p.s.
Yo! 515:
Hope you (and your "boys") are well!
Heard you went back over the pond...
Gimme a shout, I'd love to catch up!

Re: [base704] Antenna Climbing
Thank you everyone for the input!

Shveddy: I and the antennas are both in Canada, so security measures are minimal at best. I am more looking into the health factors involved. Any thoughts you have in that regard would be much appreciated.

TomAiello: See above, lol.

Base704: If you're comfortable answering - how many times (rough estimate) would you say you climbed antennas? How about base515? Think one (more) time would be a bad idea? I get that the answer would probably be "do as you will" to that question, but I am more curious what you would answer to that question directed at you. Thanks in advance :)

Re: [potentialBASEr] Antenna Climbing
Wear a fall arrest harness or jump gear harness of some sort and bring a quick draw to clip in to rest.

I'm not sure how safe you'd be in Pakistan if the US government wanted you dead or imprisoned. It's a good thing Cuba offered me asylum for whistleblowing about the whole ebola contaminated antenna thing.

Glad you enjoyed the apples. Jump with me enough and you'll never go hungry.
