300. Plenty of altitude

Just because someone has done it doesn't make it a good idea.

There was a Belgium guy that posted videos on skydivingmovies.com of frefalling a 210' bridge, often stowed and at least once with a 36" PC.

After a couple of hundred survived jumps from that bridge he died there.

The ground is full of limit pushers, stack the odds in your favor.

Absolutely agree, although I can see a point to the OP's original question. One can't really go stowed with anything larger than a 42 and, if the exit point requires going stowed (tricky climb through structure or something similar) then knowing what a reasonable lower limit is would be a good idea before attempting the object being explored!

Actually the respondents above echo what I would expect: closer to 300ft would be best. Here's why I thought that:

1s delay - insufficient airspeed for the 42 (one can toss it, but you'll just have to wait)
1.5s getting there

Let's say 1.5-2s as min delay for airspeed, so height lost would be 16 feet-per-second-per-second x 2s^2, or 64 feet

Add 140 for slider down canopy opening height loss (I use 160 for slider up), and you've got 200ft.

I can imagine that 230ft was quite tasty!

So allowing for potential hesitation / other issue, then I would expect 300ft is as low as one should go to ensure "repeatability" of the exercise...

I also used such quick calculations to work out my delay when jumping a guyed antenna so I opened between sets of wires (just in case). Anyone else do that? More stacking the odds in my favour...

Do ski BASE jumps count? If so I have a friend that early on in his BASE career jumped this 190 ft exit point stowed, granted he was going 30mph+ off the sucker!

Also depends on canopy size.

When I was active, I used a 42 quite often in the 220 range with canopies in the c.260 range, after some experimentation I found 42 gave more consistent initial inflation. I experienced a PC hessi once from a delay off 220, with a 46 (never a 42), that made my head pump, properly thought I was going in.

There was also a PC drag table knocking around during that time (I may still have it), that gave some data to this question.

Rule of thumb though was generally 250 upward with a troll 265 I used a 42, without issue.

Some see 42s <300 as "skull collecting", but myself and a couple of others played with this quite a bit and just found our comfort here, YMMV.

Was it sensible, probably not looking back, just made sense to us at the time.

@Pendragon - I always used 120 for SD calcs, seemed to test quite well.

That's false info,....I've heard this before and it's just not true. I have probably 700 jumps stowed with a 46" maybe even more, but at least that many

This is excellent info that I used as well. Working out the whole jump including where you open (extremely important IMO) stacks those odds as you said.

Follow the link, it's there he said he had a 3-5 sec canopy ride, pretty much open flair land! We have another exit we have been trying to get for the last couple of years that's even lower, but with a real steep 45 degree plus 2000 ft talus!

Yes.

Do you also take into account the slope of the wires and your separation from the object? Just because you open between where the wires attach to the structure doesn't necessarily mean you are not opening next to where the wire is in relation to you.

Put on a wingsuit and get the most out of that thing!

I predict this this be the way to open new exit points in the future.
