Confessions of a basejumper.com Wannabe
I registered for this site back on March 13, 2008 after making my first few jumps because I really wanted to get into Wingsuit BASE jumping. Now 6 years and 130 something jumps later I realize that a lot of the people in the videos I used to watch are dead, and that I probably should just stick to skydiving.

Hey, I've jumped with ya :)

If you do WS BASE, you're gonna die. Spend a couple weeks in LB and a friend or roommate will go in. Or several. Simple as that.

There are so many other things you can do that can be just as fulfilling and stimulating as WS BASE, at least temporarily, many of which will improve your skills and better prepare you for it once you've done everything else. Paragliding/paramotoring, speedflying/speedriding, hang gliding, or kiteboarding, almost all of which can be done in DFW without the annoyance and petty bullshit that goes along with almost every DZ.

You won't get a SepticTV sponsorship from doing them, but at the very least it'll extend your life a couple years and make you a more well-rounded aerial athlete. PM me to grab a beer sometime.

But there are a bunch of skydivers on DZs.

So true... I've been going to the valley since 2010, always on September. Every single year while I was there a basejumper died in the valley or somewhere near LB.

This year I lost 2 friends that were in the valley with me. Pirate

Sounds like you made the right decision. I mean this in no disrespect.

speedflying, when pushed, is no WAY safer than BASE. in my opinion, is the opposite in fact. be careful if youre going to fly speedwings, be very careful

When pushed outside your skill range, agreed. But it's easier and safer to speedfly "recreationally" than to wingsuit off a cliff just a couple weeks a year, IMO.

Driving your car on the 405 in LA is dangerous as fuck too! Risk assessment people! If it is outside your range of acceptable risk DONT DO IT

I would say that almost ANYTHING when pushed outside of your skill range is quite dangerous. :) I think a problem in ws´ing / speedflying / sharkfucking or anything else when done "recreationally" is the fact that people tend to start pushing it even though they only are doing it "recreationally" couple of weeks a year. They are too tempted to push it like the big boys in youtube and that´s when fatalities start to happen. When did you last time hear that someone went in with a wingsuit off a cliff which has a huge start (say over 300m) with a plan to just fly straight out and pull high over landing area? Probably not lately because that is not what people do, not even those who only do it "recreationally" couple of weeks a year. And from my point of view the same applies to speedflying or pretty much anything else as well.

Do you know any FSF ( First SharkFucking) courses near the valley? I mean, I have been always thinking of buying a motorbike and I've seen a lot of you tube videos of extreme synchronized swimming so I guess I would be awesome in that.

Maybe, a little bit true. Not completely. In my case I'm almost always uncurrent in the skyjumping world. Therefore I'm always conservative and checking my gear approx 5,000 times before I jump Smile It's almost like my first jump EVERY time. And I'm nervous. My average is 33 jumps per year over 34 years. I would say I jump recreationally, never professionally.

On the other hand, there are many super experienced, very current wingsuiters on the BFL. RIP.
