Fatality - GNP
BSBD to a fellow Montanan. This is the only "official" information right now. http://www.nbcmontana.com/...-in-glacier/28067052

The following release was sent out by Glacier National Park.

Park dispatch received notification Saturday night about 8 p.m. from Weiher’s family that he was overdue from a solo day hike in the Many Glacier area.

Early Sunday morning park rangers initiated a ground and aerial search. Information from Weiher’s family and friends indicated that Weiher’s intended route was probably a challenging hike in the Piegan Pass and Mount Siyeh areas, and may have included a base jump.

Park rangers found tracks that suggested Weiher might have been in the area below the summit of Mount Siyeh. The area included snowy terrain. At approximately 6 p.m. Sunday, personnel on board the Two Bear Air Helicopter spotted what they believed to be a parachute. The body of Weiher was found at approximately 7 p.m. Sunday night below the summit of Mount Siyeh.

The body was recovered and transported to the Many Glacier area via Two Bear. Glacier County Sheriff’s Office confirmed death, and the identify of Weiher.

The initial investigation indicates that Weiher attempted to base jump off an area of Mount Siyeh. In base jumping, participants jump from fixed objects and use a parachute to break their fall. Base jumping is prohibited in most National Park Services sites, including Glacier National Park.

Cooperating agencies that assisted the National Park Service with this incident included Two Bear Air, Flathead County Sheriff’s Office, and Glacier County Sheriff’s Office.

Re: [pglad] Fatality - GNP
certainly someone knew this guy. one cant get blown into a wall. one can only fly into the wall. most cliffs have zero porosity for winds. meaning your conjecture is off.
take care,

Re: [base283] Fatality - GNP
Condolences to the family and friends of Beau. Little information has been release about this incident. The information that I have been told was that Beau was alone, tracking jump, and did not make his predetermined return time. The actual time of his jump, I am not sure. If he was wearing a POV camera that would of course answer a lot of the questions everyone has surround this incident. To give some insight to the jump itself. This cliff has a ledge located 6-7 seconds after exit. The exit itself is loose scree in a remote high alpine environment. The days leading up to this particular jump were cold and snowy. An early winter storm covered this part of the state for several days. The elevation of this exit point is above 10,000ft, the storm total for this site was most likely significant. Possible scenarios, slip on exit and unable to clear the first ledge. This is possible without the addition of a snow covered exit point. The time of day that he jumped is also a factor. Late in the day this area is known for higher winds. The loads that I have been on here have all been completed early in the morning. These loads have also only been wingsuit. Tracking this wall is very advanced even with modern tracking suits. The short start makes this site extremely easy to find yourself in the corner if your exit/start is off. Outcomes for Beau, either he had a poor track, clearing the ledge but not out flying the positive lower section of the wall/talus slope resulting in and off heading opening and cliff strike. Or he did not clear the upper ledge which resulted in his canopy opening on impact and taking him to his resting point lower on the wall. This area has been jumped slick in the past one of which resulted in a cliff strike and rescue off the wall by SAR. We have kept this site secrete for a long time, obviously now it has attention in the base community and NPS. Please respect this area! It is special and very advanced. Do not come here if you do not have the proper skills(jumping/mountaineering). This is Montana's first base fatality! Please do not add more names to this list.
