Re: [pazernaker] Cliff strike
I was on this load. 3 jumpers, exiting a new (to us) exit. Arizona "shear" but chunky and unforgiving because its in bowl. Jumper in question had full on 180 offering very little time between deployment and 1st cliff strike. Jumper knocked out clean on first strike and continued hitting cliff repeatedly until impacting the talus at the base of the cliff. The only reason I'm offering more details on this is because there are a few things the community can take away from this....
1) Vents are your friends. This would have been MUCH worse had he not had vents. He was at the mercy of the wall for the entire strike progression. Without vents he could have easily died. Jumpers without vents and new people looking to buy gear. GET VENTS. Jumping slider down cliffs (or any object for that matter) is not a good idea without them.
2) It appeared (to me) watching both my perspective and the jumper in questions video, his speed going towards the wall was much faster than I would want in this situation. This could have been for several reasons. A canopy extraction between the jumper and the cliff coupled with a 180 could have caused a "swing" into the wall. It could have been a small gust of wind (although I think this is unlikely because we found his tape tailgate directly beneath the exit). Or it could have been out of tune DBS. Jumper in question did not clear toggles, but went for rears instead. What to get out of this is CHECK your DBS if your jumping in questionable areas. It might not have been the factor here, video is too unclear, but if your questioning it CHECK them before its too late.
Last of all, jumper is ok and has been out of hospital for some time, if you know someone in this area and want to make sure its not your bud feel free to PM, but if you know him you probably already know! Stay safe out there and keep being the base family I always brag about! Cheers!
