Re: [Numpty5] Jumping in Tonsai Thialand
It will be stinking hot.
Leave aside 2 days for being down and grounded with severe food poisoning.
Stay on Ton Sai beach itself - if you stay on Riley or other beaches, you'd have to either climb over a cliff to get to Ton Sai every day or pay for a boat ride.
There are no doctors on Ton Sai. No medical help at all, actually. Closest medical centre with XRay and some quite decent trauma equipment is located here:
http://goo.gl/maps/lt4XC they are open 24x7, phone number 075-695191. They speak good English. If you get injured - don't expect any medical help. The local climbers will get you down, the local potheds will give you a joint for anaesthesia. A magic mushroom cocktail could be as sophisticated as pain management would go. So plan your medical evac options ahead of time.
Stock up on meds on the mainland - there are no chemists on the "island" as they call it. Tramadol is 200 batt and is sold without a prescription (wink, wink).
Best hotel to stay at Ton Sai is "Dream Valley Resort". It is the only place that disconnects electricity for 3 hours a day only. And the only place with A/C and a pool. All the other "hotels" are very basic, no A/C, no electricity or you get power for a couple of hours.
Even at Dream Valley Resort they serve food that is kept without a fridge. There are no fridges on the island. Everyone but 1 person in our crew got sick on day 2 or day 3. After day 5 you are totally fine and can eat rotten fish if you have to )))
Riley beach and Ton Sai beach are 30 minutes climb apart (you can't call it a walk). But they might as well be in different countries. Riley is full of backpackers and tourists. There are restaurants and resorts. There may be a basic chemist there as well. But Ton Sai has a shitty beach that looks pretty nasty and that keeps all the tourists away. And that is what has and will save Ton Sai - the atmosphere is great, there are bars all along the beach with ppl smoking joints all day long and partying on magic mushies at night. It's great - and no tourists in sight. Actually no, they do come in a boat, walk out onto the beach, get freaked out by the locals and quickly retreat. Some stay to watch the sunset jump and they clap as you land on the beach )))
Jumpers are a bit of super stars there, occupying the only stretch of concrete paving on the "island" at the main bar for parachute packing.
The climb is more scarier than the jump itself.
Don't mess with the Russians - before you know it they will be sticking needles into you, attach a canopy to your scrotum and let you off flying off a cliff... and you will enjoy it.
If you have more q's - PM.
