Stechelberg (Lauterbrunnen): BASE jumper killed in an accident

A base jumper crashed early Wednesday evening in Stechelberg (Lauterbrunnen). The 42-year-old Frenchman was found dead.

The message to the accident in Stechelberg in the Lauterbrunnen went to the canton of Bern Police Department on Wednesday, August 27, 2014, by about 1730 a clock. For unknown reasons, the man got into an unstable position where he failed to open his parachute during flight. As a result, he rushed up to a tree on a hillside rock band. Immediately marched out several rescue workers. Nevertheless, the 42-year-old man was found dead from France.

In use, stood next to the Bern cantonal police of Lauterbrunnen and the SAC Air Glacier with an emergency physician.

Steph was an experienced base jumper. We shared beautiful jumps the days before. He was quiet, focused and very aware of the risk management. According to witness, he slipped at the exit and hit the ledge shortly after.
We loose a mountain of kindness and a beautiful human being... His family looses everything...

Rest in peace my friend. May you hug Ludo for us if you meet his soul behind the mirror...

Note :
How many accident happened in Stechelberg/ultimate?
These exits are so easy to reach, but dramatically not forgiving!

I have some second hand info (I'm not jumping, although I'm here in LB) so make of it what you will, but it may prevent idle speculation.

I should also add that it has been raining a lot here, especially the day before the incident. I think we got 24hrs solid rain on Tuesday, which should help put this into perspective. All exit points would have been slippery on the day of the incident.

Experienced jumper; Low Ultimate. Slipped on exit point before arm wings done up; fell before ready to jump. I would expect that the individual concerned had just put their booties on - which can be quite slippery when wet.

Take care out there everyone!

IIRC this is the second fatality from low ultimate, every other ultimate death has been from the ramp.

It's odd, when I was there a few weeks ago I remember thinking that the ledge seemed much easier to move around on than in the past - a wider trail had been stamped down. Maybe that leads to people being slightly less careful.

could have slipped on the way to the gear up cove, at least sounds like it could be the case to me.

Yeah, that's what I was referring to. Unless my memory's playing tricks the path around that boulder must be about 3x wider than it used to be.
