So in the last few months I have seen time after time jumpers blatantly being disrespectful / stupid... what is the current thought on ethics?

Found a google map with pin points (and explicted directions- cameras-bad encounters-jumpable directions etc) being passed out like candy...currently 2800 views.... With object I worked hard to open/ friendly relations. Not only my objects but the 2 other crew that have open object for 10 years and now they are on a pin point map, .... then find these same group posted a jump that is 2 miles from the fuckin dropzone.

We are having the same problem in Holland. It seems some of the FJC dont go to deep into ethics.

The video was open to the public earlier today, but is now gone or private.

Yup kinda told both of those groups exactly what I thought. I asked them to take down video and they did. ( I happen to know the guy whos property they landed on)

Told the other guys with the google maps to remove my stuff and the two others crews' objects and he removed maps.

Still what happened to pride in being ninja? His goal was youtube hits... he posted it on smackdaddies / sketchy andy page asking for youtube hits.... for a PCA from 300' (terrible tech) and im sure he landed in a tree .....

I guess people do think videos of themselves will make them look cool.... anyone want to do a "teach me to swoop" video?

I have actually taken 2 different FJC. Both taught me BASE ethics...

Teaching ethics and understanding them are two different things. And usually first jumps course you arent focused on ethics when jumping the only legal jump in America.


Im just talkin about the simple things...
Dont call attention to yourself.
Close doors you open.
For fuck sake if you take a elevator up..... bring it back down.
Dont rape other peoples objects.
Dont make a google point map and pass it out online.

I've got mixed feelings on the map thing. I've been in places where I had just absolutely no beta and I was just wondering around figuring things out. Some times a little knowledge can go a long way towards helping you to not be dead. And there aren't always locals standing around at every trail intersection to give you directions. Climbers publish their routes. We've already made some effort at education in certain areas just to reduce the death rate.

All I'm saying is that at some point we might want to start rethinking this idea of hidden secret sites. Some areas are almost crawling with newbie jumpers looking for a place to hurt them selves. Do you really want them wondering around lost jumping off the wrong exit point?

We are talking about a place where its not legal to trespass. All jumps are on someone else's property without permission. Closest " legal" jump is 1000 miles.

All these are towers, cranes,buildings, power towers, water towers. So federal trespassing, trespassing on objects protected by homeland security? (not to mention local cities, mutli million dollar construction companies, corporate communication).

If climbers share their routes, where are the exit point maps of Moab? I have seen hand drawn maps, written instructions, friends who know. Never a collective map of the exits.

I am all for sharing but what stops a idiot from finding the map. Picking and object and day blazing it, posting it on youtube? When if they had asked around. Someone knows the land owner and he will give the ok to "take pictures" on his property.

They also had names of jumpers attached to objects.. not even code names.

Uhhhh WHAT?! Just because there are dumb shits walking around shitting where they eat doesnt make what we do any less or more legal. they are secret for a reason, the more publicity we bring to these objects the more police attention we will get. There is a reason this activity is secretive, we have our legal spots that get used and abused but they are legal and then we have the dark side that we dont want people to know about. We need to keep people thinking that all BASE jumping is is Wingsuits off cliffs in Switzerland, as soon as they start thinking about us doing other stuff, it will complicate access to ALL objects. The only guarantee that we will have stuff to jump from in the future is to be ninja.

Ethics have been problematic lately. And I've seen two ends of it myself within the past couple weeks.

I'm planning some travel later this summer and have made several attempts to contact the locals along my route. I've used personal email addresses to keep it off the IntraWebSphere. No response from locals. And this is problematic, because without local assistance, people are going to be more prone to simply go for it.

In our area, when visitors contact us, we try to help them out. That helps them have fun, and helps ensure our objects are jumped "the right way", to keep 'em open.

However, sometimes you can share beta and guidance, and people will decide they're too rad to do it the right way. Sometimes they'll dayblaze your objects in plain view of the landowner and his insurance agent.

So, if we want this ethics thing to remain intact, we have to focus on both ends of it, mates. First, no matter who you are, when you visit, you had best respect the locals and the hard work they put in to keeping a BASE scene going. Second, when visitors contact us, we should be helpful (and protective, if people are trying to get in over their heads).

I'm sure there is more but two people I have noticed lately, you have Jokke Sommer day-blazing buildings in Spain and running from the cops, which is all over epic tv, not sure if it is fake or not but people watch it and think its cool, then a few months ago I watched a video of sketchy andy day-blazing a object in Moab then filming himself in the streets of Moab telling people what he just did.
Both dudes are real famous and probably really cool guys, but new people will look up to them and think that is the norm

It was real. Ghetto and I were busted by the same security guard on the same building a week later. We didnt know of the previous bust until the guard told us. I will mention we were with locals though.

I don't think that this is a localised problem - as we are experiencing something similar. We have several (new to BASE) jumpers in the UK posting photos of sensitive and illegal sites, despite several requests to the contrary. When politely confronted about the issue, they claim that 'rocks belong to no-one', and that the photos of illegal sites don't show specifics. What is there to be done about this?

dont jump with them, dont show them new objects. they dont want to play with you, let them get busted. they may heat up the area for a bit but they will get seen.

I dont have the answers. The reason I asked the community.

Heating.up objects you didnt open is one thing. When I find my name on a google pin map, with my objects,and putting my livelihood at risk. It becomes a little more serious.

I show that video in every Fundamentals course, to accompany the Ethics lecture.

Giving a lecture and knowing what your students are doing is two different things....(not saying they are your students -FBJC w no mentor)

Tom I hope you caught the video of the fbjc video they posted.....He packed a rig for his buddy and then had the guy climb solo up a 300 foot A.... He only ended up with a broken toe... after landing down wind in a tree after making no attempt to turn. In broad day light no less. If you missed them let me know as I downloaded both of them.

There are lots of people wandering around in the BASE world who've never heard any of this stuff. And they are surprised and a little bewildered when you explain it to them.

It might surprise you, but I've been call on to "arbitrate" ethics issues involving my students (after they left Twin Falls) at least 5 times in the past year. Twice the disagreements were between 2 different groups both of which included past students of mine.

I feel like there should be some secretive board where people can upload their underground shit to. So at least they have the satisfaction of other base jumpers seeing it without uploading to FB or publicly to youtube.
Not sure if this would help reduce the publicity people bring to the sport...But one thing is for sure, I do love watching the underground shit.

unfortunately, Tom is right. Anyone who has ever had a conversation with "the professor of adventure" (it almost hurts to ACTUALLY call him that) knows that there simply is no getting through to him.

this guy has quite a resumé.
- He has hit camelback in free fall after trying to jump it solo instead of taking a local (who OFFERED TO GUIDE HIM!!!) shattered both legs after JUMPING THE WRONG EXIT POINT!
-vowed to quit BASE while in the hospital from that one
-Kicked out of angel BASE in twin falls for bringing over stolen food
-asked for "tips" (begged) from pedestrians at the bridge to "put on a show" for them
-never donated to the boat driver, then bragged about it
-admitting to tricking people out of money

and now just because he has been in the sport for a while he feels he is qualified to TEACH!?! his own student said that a teacher should understand how to teach. this is crazy.

That's beyond just being an idiot. Someone close enough to him should put their foot down on that. He'll get someone fucked up or worse.

The people close to him already had him involuntarily committed to a psychiatric facility (from which he escaped). I doubt they're going to be able to "put their foot down."

Considering he was getting tourists to give him money to jump in Twin by "putting on a show", im sure he is charging for his "teaching" services What I don't understand is that anyone who has talked to him for more than 1 hour still decided to go on a "course" with him :/ This is the same guy who nobody trusted to let him PCA them in Twin.

I have been transmitting live go pro footage lately using FPV stuff and it works really good for the groundcrew. I was hoping somebody may be able to do a live broadcast on internet video of "the" tar & feather of said Professor?

So like a Pay per view !!! Awesome Idea and then after the people pay top dollar for the live feed, we can see how many youtube hits we get?

no actually the whole series is a story of my recovery and getting back into the sport. when i got injured i had insurance but could not work because of my injuries so had no income. instead of putting a "just giving" donation page up for people to give me money for my fuck up (which I've seen loads over the last few years) i made a web series for epic to ease the pressure i was under and to also keep my mind on something while recovering. Which i believed it could be a lesson and some ethics for newer jumpers to take away from my fuck up. To explain that however "safeish" we think base is these days things still happen that will ruin your day so take the steps slowly so i.e my videos show a steady slow progression to BASE jumping recovery-wind tunnel - skydiving- ground crew then back to base jumping myself showing clear stages to BASE jumping. but yeah you're entitled to your opinion
